PROFILE OF MICHAEL UNIVERSITY
PHILOSOPHY & HISTORY
Michael University is a unique private learning organisation of higher
education based in Nassau, Bahamas, on New Providence Island. The philosophy
of Michael University is to promote a better world through educational and
cultural encounters.
Michael University is registered with the Bahamas Ministry of Education.
The University is also an Executive Member of the Association of Tertiary
Institutions in The Bahamas, which is the body responsible for promoting
acceptable standards in tertiary institutions.
Michael University offers courses leading to certificates, diplomas,
vocational as well as academic programmes. In 1999, the Michael University
offered the Associate’s, Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Programmes in
International Trust Administration as well as the Master’s Degree Programme in
Investment Management as part of its mission to make education affordable and
convenient for all students locally and internationally. Since then, Michael
University has increased its course offerings to include other degree programmes,

In addition, the University offers courses and workshops in adult
education and worldwide seminars. In short, our educational efforts are relevant
to people of all ages and backgrounds, stressing a multicultural, ethical, and
environmental approach. The University is particularly suitable for the 'Global
Village'. A central concept in our educational philosophy is that people of the
world have the fundamental right to know what is going on. The University is
also very concerned with ethics and the environment in all of our endeavours.
Therefore, courses in all of these areas are offered to foster a common base of
understanding and operation amongst our community.
Michael University has formed an internal Quality Assurance Committee
to assist in the provision of outstanding education in certificate, diploma,
undergraduate, graduate and professional areas by fostering the improvement of
quality in education and all related services provided. This internal Quality
Assurance Committee reports to the Board of Governors of the University, who
oversees the Committee’s operations. This Committee aims to ensure that there
are appropriate procedures for the assurance of quality within the University and
for the promotion of quality improvement in both teaching and non-teaching
areas for the benefit of students, locally and globally.
Michael University is a part of the new global community, and is, as noted,
multicultural in outlook. The University sees itself as being part of the frontiers of
the new international information age. The selection of texts and other
international literature to accompany our curricula, our methods including audio
and visual aids, telecourses, on-site seminars, and our immense efforts to bring
together students from diverse cultures all over the world are all part of our
multicultural philosophy.

On November 4th and 5th, 1999, Michael University conducted a TRUST
LITIGATION WORKSHOP for the Supreme Court Judges in the Bahamas, including
the Chief Justice of The Bahamas. This workshop was facilitated by Professor David
Hayton, MA, LLB, LLD, Barrister & Recorder at King’s College University of London,
UK.
Also, on March 30th and 31st, 2000, Michael University conducted an
INSOLVENCY WORKSHOP for the Supreme Court Judges in the Bahamas. This
workshop was facilitated by Professor Harry Rajak, Dean and Professor of Law at the
University of Sussex, UK and the Director of Insolvency Division at the University of
Sussex.

education, for education is the key which unlocks all the treasure chests of the
human wisdom which has accumulated from the beginning of man’s long sojourn
on the planet. At the same time, it does not stand-alone: it must be linked with
integrity. Otherwise, we would be producing clever devils. However, it is difficult
to separate education from integrity, because one of the things which education
draws out is integrity.
There is a difference between education and training. A well-trained person is
one who follows the precepts of his training faithfully. A well-educated person is
one who has learnt to think for himself, applying to every new situation the
lessons, which he has learnt from all the disciplines, which he has studied.

Introduction to the
Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy
Michael University has designed the Bachelor of Science Degree Programme in
Pharmacy to provide education and practical training in pharmacy and related
subjects. Michael University is committed to preparing students to promote and
deliver pharmaceutical care in a variety of evolving health care environments by
providing them with the skills, competencies, and the technical, scientific, and
clinical bases essential for a professionally successful and personally satisfying
practice.
Michael University is also committed to promoting the exploration and
application of new educational methods, to assist the continued professional and
personal development of students, faculty and staff, to nurture respect for life-
long learning, and to provide the skills necessary for independent study. Michael
University encourages research and continued education in order to contribute to
the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in the pharmaceutical and
clinical sciences, professional practice, and education by developing individuals
qualified to pursue these important areas of inquiry.

Students who desire to study Pharmacy have their future job prospect in mind, as
well as a desire to make a contribution to healthcare. Graduates may find career
opportunities in community, institutional (hospital), consultant, and managed
care pharmacy, the pharmaceutical industry, governmental agencies, home
health care, long-term care (e.g. nursing homes), nuclear pharmacy,
pharmaceutical industry (including areas of research, drug development, clinical
trials, quality control, production, marketing, and regulatory affairs), and clinical
practice areas (e.g. cardiology, cancer chemotherapy, nutritional support, drug
information, pharmacokinetics, geriatrics, pediatrics and others), and academia.

The duration of the program is four years of full-time study. This study is
achieved through attendance at lectures based in the Bahamas. The course will be
taught by professional lecturers with the status of Professors, Ph.D.s and Masters
Degrees, as well as those professionals in the local and global business
communities.
Graduates who are conferred a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy are
qualified to pursue their Master’s Degree in Clinical Pharmacy.

ADMISSIONS & ADVANCED STANDING
ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS
Michael University will accept applications continuously throughout the
year. However, the BSc. in Pharmacy may be started at the beginning of each
Semester, that is, Fall, Winter, Spring or Summer.
ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS FOR DEGREE STUDENTS
Michael University's degree programmes are open to applicants over the
age of 18 who hold a high school diploma, who can benefit from post-secondary
education and who are mature enough to manage the responsibilities imposed by
the University's studies. The Bachelor’s Degree candidate must also hold an
Associate’s Degree from a reputable institution in order to be accepted into this
programme. However, if the candidate does not hold an Associate’s Degree,
he/she may sit an entry examination before being accepted into the Bachelor of
Science Degree Programme in Pharmacy.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS' ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS
Michael University welcomes students from other countries. English is the
language of all instruction at Michael University; therefore students will be
expected to demonstrate English language proficiency prior to enrolment as well.
All admissions documents must be received at least 30 days prior to the
start of the initial term of enrolment. All official transcripts, once received,
become the property of Michael University's and a part of the student's
permanent file. They may not be released for any reason.
International applicants will be notified by mail of their acceptance to
Michael University.

STANDARD ADMISSIONS PROCEDURES
The procedures to be followed by all students to gain admission to Michael
University are as follows:
1. Meet with an academic advisor to select an educational objective and
complete initial enrolment;
2. Complete and sign the application form;
3. Submit the non-refundable application fee;
4. Request official transcripts from all previously attended institutions;
5. Submit all admissions documents relevant to the respective programmes,
together with the admission application form and fee to the local site
office, or mail to: Office of Admissions, Michael University, P. O. Box SS-
6901, Nassau, Bahamas.
ADVANCED STANDING FOR DEGREE PROGRAMMES ONLY
As learning occurs in many different ways, Michael University offers a
programme, which will enable students to earn University credits for learning
acquired through documented experiential learning. Through this programme,
Michael University translates certain types of demonstrable adult learning
experiences into University credits, the measurement units of higher education.
Michael University will award credits to students who can demonstrate the
attainment of skills and knowledge equivalent to those expected of persons
satisfactorily completing specified portions of a degree programme by means
other than formal classroom instruction or sponsored, supervised, out-of-class
learning. For instance, those individuals who have been away from formal
education for some time may want to complete this procedure by writing a
portfolio to be evaluated for credits toward the degree programme.
Students who choose to prepare for this advanced standing programme
must first complete all the steps in the admissions procedure. A minimum of six
credits at Michael University must be completed, then the student enrols in the
advanced standing programme in which the student learns the specific skills
needed in the identification, articulation, and documentation of their prior
learning experience. Employment, volunteer activities, hobbies, travel and other

experiences are analysed closely for their identifiable skill and knowledge base.
Students are taught how to quantify such informal learning. The purpose of the
course is to guide the student in the development of a portfolio to be presented
for evaluation of credit.
To receive credit for enrolment in this advanced standing course, students
must complete a satisfactory first draft of a portfolio by the end of the course.
Thereafter the final portfolio is submitted to a review committee for evaluation.
The course is graded on a Pass/No Pass basis.

FINANCIAL POLICIES
Students who enrol at Michael University assume responsibility for the
payment of all tuition and fees. Michael University reserves the right to change
the tuition and fee schedule for any given term without prior notice. After the
beginning of a term for the degree programmes, no changes in tuition or fees will
be made which affect that term.
As Michael University is a private, non-profit organization, the costs
associated with the operation of the University and its academic programmes are
supported mainly by tuition and fee revenues.
Michael University reserves the right to cancel the enrolment of any
student failing to meet the financial obligations incurred by registration.
However, this action may not cancel the financial obligations the student
incurred by virtue of enrolment. Michael University further reserves the right to
withhold grades, statement of honourable dismissal, transcripts of record or
diploma; or withhold the right of registration for a subsequent term or course,
until all outstanding charges have been paid, and the student’s account has been
cleared.
REFUND POLICY
Tuition is not refundable except when the student officially withdraws
from a course, nor will refunds be granted after the term to which the tuition and
fees apply. Students who are withdrawn from a class or classes for disciplinary
reasons or a breach of conduct forfeit the right to a refund of any portion of their
tuition fees.
No refunds will be made until after request in writing to the Office of the
Registrar has been received. The date the letter of request has been received will
determine the amount, if any, of the refund to be paid.

ACADEMIC POLICIES
Michael University reserves the right to change existing academic policies
or to develop new ones regarding the relationship between itself and those who
enrol in its programmes. This includes tuition and fee schedules, enrolment,
programme and course offerings, graduation requirements, and registration
policies and procedures.
Those students admitted to Michael University agree to be governed by
such policies as are established by the University's Board of Governors and
administration. The continuation of enrolment by students, their award of
academic credit and the conferring upon them of degrees and certificates are
subject to the disciplinary authority of the University.
DEGREE COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS
A student is eligible to graduate, or receive a certificate, from Michael
University if he/she has satisfactorily met the following general requirements:
1. Satisfied all admissions requirements;
2. Completed all degree, major and certificate requirements;
3. Achieved the minimum cumulative grade point average (2.0 for
undergraduate programmes and 3.0 for graduate programmes) - for all
course work completed at Michael University;
4. Fulfilled all financial obligations to Michael University; and
5. Submitted the graduation application and paid the graduation fee.
CREDIT REQUIREMENTS FOR DEGREES
Michael University's Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy requires a
completion of 253 approved credits.

STUDENTS’ POLICIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
When a student enrols at Michael University, he/she is given an orientation
session about the University, its policies, course requirements and what is expected
of the student during his/her time at the University. An orientation booklet
including the class schedule is presented to the student.
Students are responsible for completing all degree requirements. They will be
informed of any changes in the University’s policies and curricula for their duration
at the University. The Office of the Registrar will be responsible for updating
students of any changes.
Students of Michael University are entitled to freedom of speech, peaceful
assembly and the right of appeal. The students are also entitled to obligations, which
are given them by being members of the University.
Michael University’s disciplinary policies are in the best interest of the
University, its staff and the students. Those students, whose behaviour is disruptive
to the University and its primary purposes of teaching and learning, will be subject to
appropriate disciplinary actions or expulsion. The disciplinary policies extend to
sexual harassment and substance abuse. Any student or staff found in breach of
Michael University’s policies, given ample evidence, will be subject to disciplinary
action or expulsion.
Michael University’s disciplinary policies also extend to students who are
dishonest with their course work, which include cheating, plagiarism, and working in
consultation with other students on projects, case analysis and assignments without
prior consent of the instructor.
The instructors are responsible for assessing students course work and
examinations. If the student has a grievance, he/she may discuss it first with the
instructor. The student also has the right to appeal to the Examination Committee
should there be a discrepancy with their grades. Further, if the student is unsatisfied
with the result of the Examination Committee, he/she may make a further appeal to
the President of the University within ten days, after which the decision of the
President is final. If an appeal is not made to the President within the mentioned
time frame, the decision of the Examination Committee will stand as final.

ASSESSMENT POLICIES
EXAMINATIONS
An Examination Committee oversees the entire process and organisation
of exams. The Committee is appointed by Michael University’s Governing Board.
REGISTRATION OF EXAMINATIONS
1. Each student must, at the end of the semester, register for exams for the
course, which he/she has an attendance totalling the credit hours attached
to the course. Failure to attend up to 75% of the credit hours in a
particular course disqualifies a student to sit for the examination.
2. A course would be examined by one or more of the following:
I. Course work and Attendance 15%
II. Written or Oral Test 30%
III. Seminars 5%
IV. Final Examinations 50%

3. Any student who failed to register and sit for a course is deemed to have
failed the course, unless the University, on reason, grants permission as
the University might accept to be appropriate.
4. Any student who has been absent from the University during the course of
the programme for any reason, either because of illness or other reasons
and whose participation and performance is unsatisfactory, would be
barred from taking the University’s exams.
5. Any student who has failed during the teaching process of the course to
carry out his/her course work, tests or any method of course assessment
cannot be awarded a grade higher than a C, irrespective of his/her
performance in the final exams.

6. Students who for serious reasons as illness or family affliction have been
unable to write one or more exams, may receive permission from the exam
committee to defer the exam to the next supplemental examination.
Evidence for such reason to cause deferment of exams must be produced
to the University’s Governing Board.
7. Students are reminded that cheating in any examination is considered a
serious offence, which could lead to expulsion from the University, or loss
of a session or semester as the University deems fit.
THE CREDIT SYSTEM
The University has attached its credit rating to each course. Each credit
rating for a course indicates the hours, which a student is required to put in a
week. The total credit rating required in a course would be attached during the
process of course registration.
REPEATING UNDERGRADUATE EXAMS AND COURSES
The first exam resit limits the core to a loss of 10% of all exams; the second
exam resit limits the core to a loss of 15% of all exams; and failure of the second
resit results in a repeat of the program.
Students may repeat a course for which a grade of C or lower is received.
However, courses for which a grade of A or B is received, may not be repeated.
When determining the GPA for a course, both the first and second grades will
count. In this case, only the initial hours will count toward the degree
requirements.
THE POINT OR GRADING SYSTEM
A grade of C or better is required for all courses which are pre-requisites to
further courses in the student’s primary programme. Only one grade of D will be
tolerated in the student’s primary core programme, provided that the course is
not a pre-requisite to further courses in the programme.
The student’s standing will be determined on the basis of the annual grade
point average (GPA) as thus:

EXAMINATION MARKINGS
1. Course Markings:
All courses will be graded by letters which are defined in percentages as
follows; and please note that these letter grades are the basis for grading
students’ final examinations and calculating students’ GPAs at the end of each
semester.

2. Final Examination:
The final examination mark is the average of all of the marks submitted by
individual examiners. All of the examinations will be graded by letter grades
only. These letter grades are defined as follows:

Average marks are determined by averaging the point values of all grades

Important Note: All examination results from the course examination to
the final examination must be approved and adopted by the University’s
Governing Board before it can be accepted as Official University result.
NOTIFICATION OF RESULTS
At the end of each course examination, students will be notified of their
exam results in points and letter grades, which helps the students to keep track of
their GPA throughout the duration of their course.
However, on completion of their various courses, which is their final
examination, they will be notified of their results after having completed all other
requirements for the award of the University, in degrees categories which is
based on the letter grade/points on their final examination. These categories are
as follows:

Please note that for the award of Bachelor of Science Degree, Section 2 -
Final Examinations under Examinations applies, after all requirements for the
award of the honours have been fulfilled. These requirements include:
I. Accepted pre-requisite to the Bachelor of Science Degree
Programme.
II. Completion of the University’s approved credit ratings.
III. At least 75% participation in all courses leading to the award of the
Bachelor of Science Degree.
IV. Satisfactory completion of the Undergraduate Thesis.
V. Michael University Board’s approval of their final exams and finally
the award of the Bachelor of Science Degree honours.

IMMIGRATION REQUIREMENTS
All foreign students are required to complete Form 1 “Application to
Reside or to Engage in Gainful Occupation” provided by the Bahamas
Immigration Department. Students are required to submit the following
documents with this form:
Two (2) passport size photographs with signature on reverse of prints
Police certificate covering five (5) years’ residence
Medical certificate dated not earlier than 30 days before the
completion of Form 1
Two (2) testimonials of good character
Bank reference.
Note that Form 1 must also be notarized by either a Commissioner of
Oaths, Notary Public, or Justice of the Peace. The B$4 stamp will be provided by
Michael University upon receipt of the student’s application.
Upon receipt of Form 1 and the above-mentioned documents, Michael
University will forward them to the Bahamas Immigration Department for
processing of the student’s visa. All students are required to possess a student
visa before entering the Bahamas to study. This process may take up to six
weeks or longer.

PROGRAMME
IN
PHARMACY
Purpose
Michael University has designed a Bachelor of Science Degree Program in
Pharmacy that will prepare individuals to work closely with the physician, other
health professionals, and the patient to help assure appropriate use of an ever-
increasing spectrum of effective medications. A particular emphasis is educating
and motivating patients with respect to the management of their drug therapy as
related to their particular medical condition.
Overall, the pharmacist is expected to provide pharmaceutical care that helps
ensure that drug therapy is appropriate, safe, effective for the condition being
treated, and cost-effective.
The duration of the programme is four years of full-time study. This study is
achieved through attendance at lectures based in the Bahamas.
Course Requirements
The Bachelor's Degree Programme in Pharmacy consists of:
This programme is a series of thirty-six (36) courses (253 credits),
which build skills that are essential to the successful completion of an
undergraduate degree programme in Pharmacy. The structure of the
Pharmacy Programme is thirty-one core courses (186 credits), one
language course (12 credits), two general-studies courses (6 credits),
one Undergraduate Thesis (9 credits), and one Pharmacy Internship
(40 credits) giving students a total of 253 credits to complete the
Bachelor of Science Degree Programme in Pharmacy.
A Written Thesis (9 credits) - topic to be determined by the student in
consultation with an adjunct faculty advisor. This thesis should be
completed during the fourth year.

Pharmacy Internship A one-year (2,000 hours) internship (40
credits) is required in this Bachelor of Science Degree Programme in
Pharmacy. Students gain experience in community or health system
pharmacy. Students will get experience in drug distribution,
compounding and pre-packaging, billing cash register, dispensing
refills, computer entry and attending phone calls. As a pharmacy
technician you will assist the pharmacist with mixing and packaging
prescriptions, maintaining client records, and referring clients to the
pharmacist. Students will get an overview of pharmacy law and ethics,
medical and pharmaceutical terminology. Students will accomplish the
techniques required to stock, package and prepare medications; and
will understand the laws to govern a pharmacy. Students may apply
for internship after their third year of studies in drugstores,
pharmaceutical industry, hospital pharmacies, as well as in nursing
homes and clinics.
A Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy would be awarded to students who
have successfully completed the required credits and passed the
requisite examinations.

Course Description
This course is an extremely important coverage of the principles of finite
mathematics and their applications in business, social science and the life
sciences. It is designed for one term and taken primarily by students majoring in
business, economics, life sciences, sciences and the social sciences including
other single-honors courses. The core topics and their applications are
presented, such as linear functions; systems of linear equation and matrices;
linear programming (both graphical and simplex methods); mathematics of
finance; ratios, proportion and variations; inequalities; set and probabilities; and
counting principles are discussed with an emphasis on the development and
testing of the student's problem-solving ability. We use discussions and
examples in the teaching pattern of this course to illustrate ideas and techniques

This course examines the laws and regulations relating to the practice of
pharmacy, and the regulation and control of drugs cosmetics, and medical
devices. Most available pharmacy law texts thus far have been written by lawyers
and present heavy, dense, legalistic reading that focuses on legal theory. The text
used in this course, “Essentials of Pharmacy Law” is written by a practicing
pharmacist in clear, accessible, contemporary prose that concentrates on
application. This course covers a compilation and commentary of selected
federal laws and regulations pertaining to the general practice of pharmacy in the
United States. It covers topics in a simple and concise format. Furthermore, case
studies and review questions and a bulleted summary of key points make for easy
reading and aid in comprehension. This course will be extremely useful to
pharmacy students preparing for the Multi-State Jurisprudence Exam (NABLEX
MJPE), as well as the voluntary Pharmacist Competency Exam offered to

This course in Introduction to the Pharmaceutical Sciences provides an
introductory and coherent overview of the fundamental principles that underlie
the pharmaceutical sciences, including pharmaceutics, pharmacology,

Emphasis is also placed on chemical, biological, and mathematical principles if

Course Description
Continuing from Medicinal Chemistry I, this course is especially useful to
students in chemistry as well as medicinal chemistry. The course gives a realistic
portrayal of the various approaches that can be used to develop a drug. It
contains four intriguing and detailed accounts of the close interface between
synthetic chemistry, structure-activity relationships, biochemistry, and
pharmacology. The course covers a comprehensive survey of the immunophilin
area specifically focussing on neuroregenerative applications in the central
nervous system. Further, there is an overview of the development of a potent
analgesic compound that works via modulation of neuronal nicotinic
acetylcholine receptors. In addition, there is a description of dopamine D-2
autoreceptor partial agonists as potential therapy for the treatment of
schizophrenia. Also covered is a summary of the successful program in which
potent non-peptide inhibitors of HIV protease from the AIDS virus were
developed.
This course presents first hand accounts of industrial and academic research
projects in medicinal chemistry. The overriding purpose is representation of the
many organic chemical facets of drug discovery and development. This would
include: de novo drug design, organic chemical synthesis, spectroscopic studies,
process development and engineering, structure-activity relationships,
chemically based drug mechanisms of action, the chemistry of drug metabolism,
and drug physical-organic chemistry.

This course is designed to make students very knowledgeable in the structure and
function provided by computational methods and in vitro pharmacological proof-
of-concept experiments to Structure-Activity Relationship (SAR) development

Medicinal chemistry is, at its most basic level, an empirical science largely based
on chemistry. However, this course in Medicinal Chemistry III continues from
Parts I and II. This course describes recent advances in organic synthesis
methodology and their applications to pharmaceutical research. Students will
see in this course that in the pharmaceutical industry, computational methods

SYNTHESIS of these compounds still remains the most crucial topic in drug

This course describes all recent developments in organic synthetic methodology

Course Description
This course continues from Pharmacy Practice I and will further enhance the
students’ pharmacy practice skills through contact with patients, health
professionals, and the public with emphasis on nonprescription medication
counseling, health promotion, and disease prevention activities. This course will
also enhance students’ insight into hospital pharmacy practice and their
appreciation for different types of pharmacy practice.
Students will be assigned to a community pharmacy site and preceptor and
students will be required to counsel patients on nonprescription medication,
health promotion, and disease prevention issues. The students will work under
their preceptors supervision in the pharmacy and laboratory. The preceptors
responsibilities include guiding and evaluating students, coordinating the
programme on the pharmacy site, providing a final grade for the students and
being a role model and instructor.
The students will be expected to concentrate on health promotion and disease
prevention activities and move on to more complex disease prevention and health
promotion strategies. In addition, they are encouraged to develop their own
health promotion and disease prevention tools.

Course Description
This course will cover the safety aspects that have become an outstanding issue in
the process of drug discovery and development. Until 15 years ago, drug
discovery and evaluation was a sequential process starting with the selection of
the most active compound from a series of newly synthesized compounds by
means of special pharmacological assays. Safety aspects were addressed by
pharmacological testing of the selected compound in high doses in tests directed
at indications other than the intended indication of the new compound. These
tests were followed by pharmacokinetic studies, which were mainly aimed at
confirming of a suitable half-life time and at oral activity. Students would also
cover the safety aspects that relied mostly on toxicity studies, which gave
information on changes of organ structure rather than on organ function.
Students would learn how toxicological and pharmacokinetic studies were
adapted to the progress of studies in clinical pharmacology and clinical trails.
Discussion will be held on the exposure of a drug to the body by pharmacokinetic
studies on absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion which have to be
investigated at an early stage of development and can contribute to the selection
of a compound for development. This course will cover how genetic variation
contributes to interindividual differences in drug responses by collecting
comprehensive, integrative information about specific proteins and genes.
This course also spans the wide array of technical, methodological, regulatory,
and ethical issues related to pharmacogenetics and stresses the impact of
pharmacogenetic data on patient care and management.
This course is especially designed for those involved in clinical trials of drugs, and
for pharmacists who have to know the safety requirements of drugs.

Course Description
This course in Dispensing is designed to impart knowledge to students of the
creation and dispensing of custom-made medications, which is the root of the
pharmacy profession and often symbolized by the mortar and pestle. The practice
involves mixing, measuring, and making safe, elegant pharmaceutical dosage
forms. Students will learn the importance of this practice as there are many
patients who cannot take traditional medication such as pediatric patients,
hospice patients, and patients with allergies to common dyes and fillers.
Compounding will be discussed, as it has come under increasing regulatory
scrutiny over the past ten to fifteen years due to risks involved in the practice.
Students will also learn of the traditional FDA regulation of compounding
practice and its statutory authority and discretion to regulate the practice.
Students will learn of the new regulation, withdrawing compounding from
traditional FDA regulation, which is necessary to protect patient access to this
important practice. Additionally, the pharmacists will learn of clear guidelines for
appropriate practice and patients need assurances of product safety. This course
examines the history, need, and risks of pharmaceutical compounding.

At the end of this course, students should be able to:

information required to support effective medication-related
patient-care decisions is readily available in a useful form to
physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other pertinent health-care

It is geared toward developmental progression of competency in the

Communication will be focused on an attempt to equip the students with a

This course on Drug Development and New Drug Technologies is important and
exciting and discusses the practical application of genomic information to the
development of drugs. Recent technological advances have led to a rapid
acceleration in our ability to gather genetic data. The complete genetic sequences
are now known for several organisms and accelerated programmes are in place
for sequencing many other genomes, including human. The speed with which
complete sequencing can be accomplished will continue to increase as new
technologies come online. In principle, the scope for developing new diagnostic
techniques and drugs is now greater than at any time in human history, but the
pathway from genetic information to usable drug is a long and complex one.
This course covers such subjects as the current state of the art in sequencing
technology, the applications of these new technologies to sequencing the
genomes of various organisms, and the challenge of proteomics. Additionally,
students will be exposed to the legal and ethical implications of the new uses of
genetic data, and functional genomics from the point of view of the
pharmaceutical industry.

To emphasize extensive involvement in drug product optimization, including the
clinical, chemistry, manufacturing, control, and toxicology studies needed to

Course Description
This pharmacy internship programme is designed to assist students in exploring
career options through practical training. Students who have completed their
second or third year of study have the greatest opportunity for focused industrial
or academic internships.
Academic internships may be pursued within government and/or private
agencies or other academic institutions abroad. Research topics could include
cancer research, neuropharmacology, drug discovery, and pharmaceutical
product development, formulation, or delivery.
Industrial internships may be sponsored by corporate partners whose areas of
emphasis include product formulation, manufacturing or regulatory affairs, as
well as research aimed at product development or drug delivery.
The purpose of the internship is to provide future pharmacists an opportunity to
experience pharmacy practice in a health-system setting. Students will receive
extensive practice experiences during the internship programme through a
community pharmacy, ambulatory practice, outpatient oncology practice, a
hospital setting and a specialty practice site (e.g. research lab, clinical practice in
Psychiatry or Geriatrics).
The pharmacy internship programme requires students to complete a total of
one-year practice training. Students would work a total of 2,000 hours to earn
40 credits.
Each student is required to be supervised by a preceptor to be assigned at the
beginning of the internship period. The preceptor will oversee the overall
experience, assign projects, and meet with the intern periodically.

The intern will actively participate in patient care activities by observing and
assisting the pharmacist. The intern will learn through a variety of activities
including rotations through several core areas of practice, attendance at a variety
of meetings, completion of projects, assigned readings, and presentations to
other pharmacy staff. Time spent in each area will be tailored to meet the
individual’s interests and will take into account past experiences. Projects will be
assigned and monitored by the preceptor responsible for the rotation. One major
project will be completed during the internship and a presentation will be made
related to that project at the end of the pharmacy internship programme.
The goal is to improve the intern’s public speaking skills and to educate other
staff members. Another goal is for the intern to gain a good understanding of the
scope of pharmacist activities in that area of practice.
