Hello {{contact.first_name}},

Hello wonderful human,

A consistent theme in my personal and professional life is:

How do we take care of our systems during personal or collective hardship?

How do we create space between ourselves and the responses and emotions that overwhelm and drive us?

What does that even look like?

Living life is a lot, isn’t it? The discouragement and setbacks can feel relentless. To keep going and keep ourselves afloat we have to find ways to set boundaries, to nourish, find support, sustain and replenish body, mind and spirit.

In my last Pause reflection, I wrote about how world cup soccer matches offered the powerful opportunity for collective effervescence: how our heart rhythms synchronize when we share an intense emotion. I hope you were able to take in some of that global excitement. I couldn’t get enough of it—not only the athletic drama, but also witnessing the spectators’ and athletes’ range of emotions.  Even though most of us experience big sporting events through the TV, feeling and expressing in community is a form of tending to our parts. And that’s healing.

I’ve had the privilege of enjoying a summer filled with significant family and friend events: weddings, a family reunion with over 70 Norwegian relatives, a week-long wilderness river float with 13 others and additional multi-day friend-group reunions. It's certainly felt like abundance, especially having missed out on social gatherings for years after my TBI.

Also, working primarily online the past six years, in-person gatherings always remind me of the power of exchanging human energy, presence, connection and care IN THE FLESH. While the virtual world gives us opportunities to connect in ways otherwise impossible, our humanness ultimately requires time together to feel seen and known and to thrive.

How are you doing with connecting IN PERSON with others?

What changes would you like to make in this aspect of your life?

What would help you experience more in-person opportunities to connect?

A source of important personal and professional connection and support the past 3 years has been teaching IFS in person to a wide range of students at the Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health—North America’s largest yoga retreat center. Kripalu has welcomed generations of yoga pioneers, therapists, writers, spiritual leaders, teachers and seekers from around the world for over 50 years.

On August 9, my annual IFS retreat with yoga pioneer, Amy Weintraub begins! (scroll down for details. There are still a few seats left and we’d love for you to join us!)

Being able to share my craft and my passion in this nourishing setting feels like a dream come true each time I return to the 100 peaceful acres in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, neighboring Tanglewood, which also hosts indoor and outdoor summer music concerts. When Erik and I sat on the lawn for a Chanticleer concert in the late 90s after visiting my grandmother in Teaneck, NJ, I never imagined I’d be teaching at Kripalu 30 years later!

The Kripalu setting supports the intention for each retreat: to be held in your healing journey, to unplug from life’s pressures, to find clarity and spaciousness, to slow down, reflect and integrate.

This is sacred, rare, restful time that supports unblending from parts and reconnecting with our Self energy.

Walk in the woods, replenish by the lake, receive a massage, reflect in a meditation room, walk the labyrinth, enjoy a yoga or movement class, or just BE between sessions—with no agenda or responsibilities.

IFS newbies through Advanced IFS Professionals,

Rest in the healing space of Kripalu as you tend to your parts and expand your Self energy.

Only offered once a year.   https://kripalu.org/people/laura-schmidt
