With the year starting at a blistering pace and most of us thinking long and hard about the future as elections draw near, let's talk about legacy.
Property and legacy are as intertwined as your childhood memories are with the home you grew up in.
They are as big a part of the future you want to build, as is the size of the dream home on your dream board. The one you want to raise your children in thereby laying the foundation for their bright futures.
However, building a lasting positive legacy is not by chance.
It takes thorough planning, sound advice and a commitment to executing those well made plans.
When I started my property journey 20 years ago I was privileged to have advisors and parents who had put plans in place to create an inter-generational legacy through estate planning.
At that stage it only included the home we lived in, but the same principles apply for your investment portfolio.
A well thought-through trust structure has, and probably always will be, the way to go in order to protect your wealth long-term and build the platform to pass on a financial legacy to your children and to those who come after them or to whomever you want to leave a legacy. (Yes even your pets could inherit!)
Trusts can be used locally in South Africa for asset protection or you could set up an offshore structure for international capital mobility and protection.
Trusts offer the following major advantages in terms of:
- tax planning
- creating a separate legal entity
- asset protection
- continuity through generations
- privacy
If you are planning on building a property portfolio in SA or abroad or significant wealth in your lifetime, I would strongly suggest you look into getting a trust structure set up as the basis of your wealth planning and financial legacy.
With recent changes in the annual disclosure requirements for South African trusts, be sure you stay compliant.
If you need a recommendation or have some questions please do get in touch, we are always happy to help.
Have a blessed Passover weekend and break.
Yours in property.
