A Concept to Challenge Your Status Quo
The faster we move the more important predetermined decisions become. A fundamental way to achieve this clarity around crucial decisions is by identifying the goals and values - "When goals and values are clear, decisions are easy." Goals are the measurable milestones you aim to achieve, such as revenue targets, product launches, or market expansions. Values, on the other hand, are the intangible principles that guide your actions and decisions, such as integrity, innovation, and customer focus. Clearly defining these aspects can streamline decision-making processes and drive your business forward. There is plenty of conversation and philosophy around defining our goals. However, how can you define your values effectively?
Values are more intrinsic and often more challenging to pinpoint. They are the core beliefs that shape your company culture and influence every decision you make. Here are two exercises to help you define your values:
Dinner with Icons:
Identify three people, dead or alive, close to you or from afar, whom you would want to have dinner with and why. Reflect on why you chose these individuals. Typically, they embody the values you hold dear. For instance, if you admire Steve Jobs for his innovation, Mother Teresa for her compassion, and Elon Musk for his audacity, these reflect core values you may prioritize: innovation, compassion, and audacity.
Audit Your Exits:
Think about the last three business relationships you ended and why. Analyze the reasons behind these decisions. Often, these exits occurred because of value misalignment. For example, if you parted ways with a supplier due to unethical practices, a client due to lack of transparency, and an employee due to poor teamwork, the values of integrity, transparency, and collaboration are likely central to your business ethos.
By identifying the values that resonate with you and recognizing the ones that caused friction, you can create a clear set of guiding principles.
