Kari and Perrin – AKC Novice Tricks

Meet Perrin: He may be blind and deaf, but hold your gasps! This pup not only holds his own with his brothers and sisters, but he just earned his AKC Novice Trick Dog title at The Dogs' Spot. Armed with a super sniffer and a touchy-feely approach, he navigates his world like a champ.

His foster mom worked with Perrin and his sister to graduate from our Surviving Adolescence class. Perrin was adopted during the class and his new mom Kari reports he is the dog everyone is looking for: he plays well with their other dog, he enjoys meeting new people when he goes to an outdoor cafe or work with her, he's fully comfortable navigating their house and new spaces, and for his age he's quite laid back and calm. They've enrolled in some private lessons to further their and his education. We at The Dogs' Spot are so honored to be part of his journey from Chain of Hope, a local rescue, to a loving home. We can't wait to see what the future holds for him!

Staff Spotlight: Laura

Laura is the founder and owner of The Dogs’ Spot – Dog Training Center. Laura has been teaching people how to train their dogs since 2004.

Laura teaches Behavior and Training 101 and K9 Fitness, and specializes in working with blind, deaf, and blind and deaf dogs.

In 2021, Laura co-authored a book to help people with puppies called "Your Puppy and You, a Step-by-Step Guide to Raising a Freak'n Awesome Dog."

She lives with five dogs: Fiona, Louis, Poppet, Dublin and Hamish, four cats: Leopold, Peaches, Angus and Kira, and one very supportive husband: Kirby.

Laura got into training because she had a reactive dog named Dudley.

The trainers she enlisted to help suggested punitive methods. Since Dudley seemed to be reacting the way he did due to stress, it didn't make sense to do things that would add to his stress. Laura had the good fortune to hear a talk by author and behaviorist, Dr. Patricia McConnell, which turned things around. Laura learned that these issues can be resolved using kindness, empathy, and positive reinforcement techniques. From there she went on to share that love for dogs and respect for dog owners with everyone coming to her center.

Laura has a Bachelor's in Business Administration, is a graduate of the Karen Pryor Academy for Animal Training and Behavior and has gained more certifications, faculty positions and consulting gigs than we can list.
