March Spot Lights Newsletter - Check Out Our New Control Unleashed: Calm Foundations Class

Voted The Pitch's Best of KC Best Dog Training 2022 & 2023

Welcome Spring!

When most people get a dog, they purchase basic supplies like a food and water bowl, a collar and leash, a dog bed and toys, dog food and treats, etc. If they don’t already have one, they find a veterinarian and possibly a groomer. But how many immediately look for a dog trainer as part of their care team? Unfortunately most people wait until their dog is misbehaving, or worse yet have developed a behavior problem, before they seek the services of a professional trainer. According to Ken Ramirez, Executive Vice President and Chief Training Officer of the Karen Pryor Academy, “training is not a luxury, but a key component to good animal care.”

Staff Spotlight: Ella

Ella became acquainted with The Dogs' Spot when a neighbor suggested they check out our training classes for their dog.

While attending classes, Ella developed an avid interest in learning more about canine cognition, training and behavior. This led her to ask if she could continue to observe classes, which we were happy to have her do. During this period she asked about books to read to gain more education in dog training. Two of the books she read that really stood out for her were Don't Shoot The Dog by Karen Pryor and Calming Signals by Turid Rugaas.

After observing classes for about six months, she decided to apply for a position with us and the rest, as they say, is history! Ella has been an official member of The Dogs' Spot staff since 2021. Since then she has served in virtually every position we have.

You may find her on the Front Desk in our Boutique, helping to clean our facility, attending our booth at a dog event, and then serving as an Assistant Instructor in a class. In her role as Assistant Instructor, she has assisted with more classes than almost any other member of our staff including Puppy Prep, Surviving Adolescence, Family Manners, Canine Good Citizen Prep, Caring Canines Therapy Dog, Pupourri, Tricks, Excellent Engagement, K9 Nose Work®, Agility and Reactive Dog.

Ella is studying to become a veterinarian and will be able to use the knowledge she's gained here in this field. She said she especially enjoyed learning about canine body language during puppy play time in the Puppy Prep classes. We're selfishly hoping Ella will take all of this knowledge and become the first veterinary behaviorist in our area. We all wish her the best of luck in her studies!

North Kansas City Animal Shelter's

March Dog of the Month

Meet Houdini

Meet this Sweet and Shy, handsome boy, Houdini!

Houdini went on quite the adventure before ending up at the shelter. He was living on the streets of North Kansas City and spent two months evading all efforts to capture him, thus earning him his name. Houdini was eventually caught with the help of the KC Dog Trappers.

Although he is a very loving dog, Houdini is timid around new people. He would probably require multiple visits to the shelter in order for him to feel comfortable around his new family. Houdini still refuses to get on chairs or couches, and only recently began lying on a dog bed after being at the shelter for many months. Houdini is very loyal and loves getting attention from those he trusts. Houdini enjoys playing with other doggy friends and is house trained.

Houdini will be neutered and vaccinated before he goes home with his new family. His adoption fee is $105.

Contact the NKC Animal Shelter:(816) 274-6024, DM them on Facebook, or email them at animalcontrol@nkc.org.

Get $100 – and FREE training

Adopt Houdini and receive a $100 gift certificate from The Dogs’ Spot!
