The #1 Secret to a Well-Behaved Dog

Behavior that gets rewarded gets repeated. It’s that simple. Okay, it’s that simple but not always that easy.

If I want my dog to be well behaved, I can often catch them in the act of being “good” and reinforce them for it. If I do this, the laws of learning tell us I’ll get more of those behaviors. Because I know this, I try hard to notice when my dogs are being calm, quiet and polite. These are three of the things I look for in well behaved dogs. It’s harder than it sounds, though. Because these behaviors don’t annoy me, my attention isn’t always drawn to them, making these behaviors easy to miss. I have to be actively paying attention to what my dogs are doing to catch them in the act so I can be sure to reinforce them when they are making good choices.

February Dog of the Month

Meet Pretzel

Meet the Sweet and Spunky, Pretzel!

On a cold, rainy day in late December, an approximately five month old sweet chocolate lab puppy was found abandoned in North Kansas City's Waggin' Trail Dog Park. Shelter staff named him Pretzel! He is now about seven months old and full of spunk! He also has the craziest wiggliest butt they have ever seen! Pretzel loves being where the people are and loves hugs, pets, kisses and playing in the snow. And what self respecting lab doesn't love treats? Pretzel is no exception!

Pretzel will be neutered and vaccinated before he goes home with his new family. His adoption fee is $105.

Contact the NKC Animal Shelter:(816) 274-6024, DM them on Facebook, or email them at cblundell@nkc.org.

Get $100 – and FREE training

Adopt Pretzel and receive a $100 gift certificate from The Dogs’ Spot!

Spend it shopping in their Boutique for new doggy bling, a food bowl, enrichment toys, treats, a leash from the Lucky Leash Co. or training.

And, to help Pretzel and his family learn about each other, The Dogs' Spot will give you a free 30-minute training session, in-facility or virtual.

Special thanks to our friends at Fetch Light Photography for the beautiful images of Pretzel!
