Happy New Year!

The Positive Side of Dog Training

Positive reinforcement based training for me means that I will employ solutions in my practice that focus on helping my learners, both human and canine, understand what I want them to do and reinforce them for doing it. I use management to prevent practice of undesirable behaviors while I’m teaching alternative desirable ones in their place. I play detective to try to learn why a dog engages in a behavior because, as Dr. Susan Friedman, professor emeritus in the Department of Psychology at Utah State University, likes to say, “all behavior serves a purpose”. Armed with this information, I can then influence the dog's behavior though changing the antecedents (the things that happen before a specific behavior occurs), and the consequences (the things that the dog likes and predicts will happen after a specific behavior occurs).

We're proud of our Dogs' Spot community's accomplishments!

Congratulations to our own Prairie and her Border Collie, Solo, who finished 19th out of about 287 teams in the AKC Fast CAT Invitational in Orlando, Fl, last month.

We had a whole lot of FUN, FRIENDS, and MEMORIES made at our Holiday Teacup Dogs Agility Trial held in December! Thank you to Judge Heather Cline for all the fun courses, all the teams who participated, and everyone who worked to make the trial run so well! We can hardly wait for the next one!

Trainer Spotlight: LeAnn Hiserote

LeAnn is our longest tenured instructor. She has been a valued member of the training staff since 2012. Through the years, she has helped teach virtually every class we offer.

Her credentials include being certified as an agility instructor through the North American Dog Agility Council (NADAC) and serves as our lead agility instructor.

LeAnn is at the heart of our agility program. She and her team are constantly evaluating how they can help students, human and canine, develop their skills, while ensuring all are having fun. In addition to teaching agility, LeAnn also

serves as a lead Assistant Instructor for Puppy Prep and Surviving Adolescence classes and helps train all of our new instructors.

LeAnn is an avid agility competitor. She and her dog Bear have been active in agility since 2012. They have competed nationally and have earned their NADAC Agility Title Champion.

Bear, who is now 15, is retired from agility and enjoys doing K9 Nose Work®. LeAnn is training her new agility partner, Sage, who has big paws to fill but is showing a lot of promise. We can't wait to see how far they go!

January Dog of the Month

Meet Champ

Meet Champ, your new best friend!

Champ is the brother of Mocha, who was our featured dog last month. Like his sister, Champ is a beautiful brown, one year old, mixed breed dog with the most amazing ears! He loves the company of other doggie friends and especially likes to wrestle with them. Champ is is shy when he meets people for the first time but warms up quickly.

With such big ears, it's no wonder Champ listens so well. This of course helps him respond when called. When he comes, he loves to be rewarded with his favorite things, snacks and play.

Champ and his sister, Mocha (who is also still available for adoption) were abandoned in North Kansas City in September.

Champ will be neutered and vaccinated before he goes home with his new family. His adoption fee is $105.

Contact the NKC Animal Shelter:(816) 274-6024, DM us on Facebook, or email us at cblundell@nkc.org.

Get $100 – and FREE training

Adopt Champ and receive a $100 gift certificate from The Dogs’ Spot!

Spend it shopping in their boutique for new doggy bling, a food bowl, enrichment toys, treats, a leash from the Lucky Leash Co. or training.

And, to help Champ and his family learn about each other, The Dogs' Spot will give you a free 30-minute training session, in-facility or virtual.

Special thanks to our friends at Fetch Light Photography for the beautiful images of Champ!
