Four Things All Puppies Need

It’s sometimes easy to forget, but young puppies are literally baby dogs. They have not been on this Earth very long and do not understand the ways of the world. Through their exploration they will discover gravity, inertia and how to move their bodies space. They will learn about their environment through new smells, tastes, sights, sounds, and sensations. Puppies aren't born born understanding verbal language but of course, can begin to comprehend some of words over time. It’s up to their new families to help their puppy navigate this very important stage of development. During their Socialization (or sometimes called Sensitive) period, which is from about three to twelve weeks of age, we have the opportunity to make a positive impression, create optimism, help puppies become more confident. Here are the four most important things to keep in mind as you help your puppy grow into the dog of your dreams.

Trainer Spotlight: Grace Slater-Pinnick

Karen and her Golden Retriever, Zephyr.

• Grace has a bachelor’s degree in Biology with a concentration in Zoology. She is currently taking an advanced canine behavior course through the American College of Canine Studies.

• Grace instructs our agility classes. She has been competing since 2016 and has qualified for nationals multiple times. She and her agility partner, Storm, have earned an agility championship title. Grace has a great eye and coaching style to help her students improve their handling skills. In addition to agility, Grace participates in FastCAT. When she’s not doing agility with her two dogs, Storm and Galaxy, she enjoys trick training and has even earned a trick title with her cat, Star.

• In addition to dog training, Grace is a figure skating coach who still actively competes herself. Coaching ice skating has helped Grace develop a good eye and an understanding of movement. This allows her to provide students with valuable feedback on how they can improve their performance.

September Dog of the Month

Meet sweet Sprout who has

the best ears ever!

If you're looking for a fun, athletic friend, Sprout may be the girl for you. She is a beautiful brindle pit mix with wonky ears, a playful personality and a huge heart.

Sprout can be shy at first, but don't let that fool you. Once she's decided you're okay, she's sweet, affectionate and loyal and has energy for days! She's very treat motivated, which makes training easy. Once she's a little older, she's likely to make a a great jogging partner or even enjoy agility.

Sprout was found running at large around North Kansas City in June and sadly her family never came to take her home.

She is up-to-date on vaccinations and will be spayed before going home.

Her adoption fee is $105.

Want a meet-and-greet with Sprout? Great! Contact the NKC Animal Shelter:

Boutique Product Spotlight

Woof's Pupcicle Enrichment Toy

Be sure to check out our fun, new enrichment toy!

The Pupcicle is the cleanest treat toy out there, especially given that a dog will lick at it for 30 minutes or more! Slots on the top prevent drool from pooling, there are no holes on the bottom, and it’s weighted to stay upright so it won’t tip out food. All in all, it’s about as clean a toy as it gets!

Simply fill the ball with our Pupsicle Pops or the soft or frozen treat of your choice. Peanut butter, canned wet food, yogurt, fruit, and bone broth are just a few of the freezable fillings you can use.

The Pupsicle is dishwasher-safe and unscrews in the middle, so it’s easy to clean and fill. You won’t have to worry about moldy food residue.

Our small Pupsicle is 2.9" in diameter and 2.2" tall, our large Pupsicle is 3.6" in diameter and 2.8" tall, and our X-Large size is 4.78" in diameter and 3.8" tall. The Pupsicle is made from a non-toxic, BPA and Phthalate free natural rubber.
