The Dogs' Spot - Spot Lights

June 2023

4th of July Preparations

As tempting as it can be to want to bring your dog with you to a fireworks display, it's not, frankly, in your dog’s best interest. As much as you may enjoy the show, it’s unlikely your dog will. Moreover, exposure to the loud sounds, bright lights, and smokey smells may induce fear, making a lasting impression. If your dog was not already afraid of fireworks, they may be going forward. It's just not worth the risk. As Benjamin Franklin once said “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. It’s much easier to prevent a fearful reaction than it is to fix one.

If you already know your dog is afraid of fireworks, to the point they hide, shake, salivate, or show other visible signs of fear, there are things you can do to help them, and you still have time to prepare.

For the second year in a row, Sniffspot recognized Dogs' Spot trainers as being the best in Missouri. Karen DiConstanzo, KJ Thies, and Laura Hills were specifically honored this year, more than from any other individual training facility in the state.

The Sniffspot reported they "selected top dog trainers in Missouri by broad voting from the Sniffspot community and the general public. These trainers are expert dog trainers, who received votes from their delighted customers, due to their excellent dedication to customer service, excellent results and general care they exhibit for their clients. Many have worked with thousands of dogs and are highly experienced trainers.

All of the Missouri trainers included on this list use positive reinforcement training only, as defined by no force, fear, intimidation, or aversive methods used. This includes not using any specifically aversive approach to training or training aid, such as a prong or electronic dog training collar (also called remote dog training collar or shock collars).

This list is compiled by Sniffspot, which is the largest network of private dog parks for rent in the world. Each of the thousands of Sniffspot dog parks are hosted by locals on private land with 100% private bookings to maximize safety for guests and their dogs. Sniffspot offers various types of dog parks, including fenced, water parks, indoor dog parks, dog beaches and more. Sniffspot has worked closely with dog trainers to create safe spaces for dogs and our top trainer lists are a natural extension of that relationship."

Jake came into the North Kansas City Animal Shelter on October 10, 2022. He is an approximately 2 year old male shepherd mix. Jake was found as a stray dog and has been at the shelter the longest (coming up on an 8 month stay). Jake loves to run and get his exercise - He's VERY fast. He loves to play with toys and eat lots of food. Jake is very obedient and likes to be where the people are. Jake would do best as an only dog. Jake is a big dog breed - weighing around 65 pounds.
