I used to be really bad at performance reviews. Like, really bad. I didn’t know what to say or what the point of it all really was. And when I was on the receiving end of feedback? My first instinct was to explain why it wasn’t my fault—or I’d take it soooo personally.
No one teaches us how to do this. We’re expected to just know how to have hard conversations, give useful feedback, and somehow stay calm and clear through it all. But I learned—through trial, error, and some very patient mentors—that this is a skill. And if you want to evolve and lead, then you have to learn it.
I hope this summer season brings you feedback that’s clear, honest, and actually helpful. Both for the giver and the receiver. Not because it’s always easy—but because when it’s done right, it changes everything.
