Featured Ride: Llano County LoopAustin to the Highland LakesLast month we ran the Twisted Sisters out to Leakey. This month, go northwest into Llano County and the Highland Lakes corridor, some of the most satisfying and underappreciated riding accessible from Austin. Head northwest out of Austin on US-183 through Lampasas, then pick up FM-580 west toward Llano. The FM roads through Lampasas and Burnet Counties north of the Highland Lakes are genuinely excellent. Rolling Hill Country terrain with granite outcroppings, cedar and live oak cover, and roads that follow the contours of the land rather than bulldoze through them. Traffic is minimal on a July weekday morning and the early light on the limestone hills is worth the early alarm. Llano is worth a full stop. A small river town on the Llano River with a classic Texas courthouse square and some of the better breakfast spots in the Hill Country. From Llano, cut south on TX-16 toward Fredericksburg, running through the heart of the granite country where the Enchanted Rock dome rises above the scrub. The descent into Fredericksburg from the north on TX-16 is one of the more satisfying approach roads in this part of the state. Return to Austin on US-290 east through Johnson City and Dripping Springs. The same corridor as last month's route but running the opposite direction through the wine country approach. The full loop runs 220–260 miles depending on your routing and the combination of Lampasas farm roads, Llano River country, granite highlands, and the wine corridor return makes it one of the more varied day rides accessible from Austin. Pro Tip: Leave Austin no later than 6am. FM-580 through Lampasas County before 7:30am is completely empty and the morning light across the cedar hills is worth every minute of the early start. Hit Llano for breakfast at 8am and run TX-16 south before the Enchanted Rock tourist traffic builds. |

Did You Know? Texas Motorcycle FactTexas is one of the few major states where riders 21 and over can legally ride without a helmet. Provided they've completed a safety course or carry $10,000 in health insurance. But here's the legal reality most Texas riders don't fully understand: if you're in a crash without a helmet and suffer a head injury, the at-fault driver's insurance company will argue that your choice not to wear a helmet contributed to the severity of your injuries. Under Texas's modified comparative fault standard, that argument can reduce your compensation. Sometimes significantly even when the crash was entirely the other driver's fault. The helmet decision in Texas isn't just a safety calculation. It has direct financial implications for your crash claim. Understanding that before you make the choice is something every Texas rider deserves to know. |

Moto Camping: July EditionCamping in Central Texas in July is absolutely doable if you pick the right spots. Water access is everything:Garner State Park (Concan, TX) The best July camping destination accessible from Austin about 2.5 hours southwest through Uvalde. The Frio River runs through the park at a constant cold temperature that makes July camping genuinely enjoyable. The roads through Real and Uvalde Counties on the approach are excellent Hill Country riding. Books out months in advance for July. Reserve immediately. Pedernales Falls State Park (Johnson City, TX) About 45 minutes west of Austin; the most convenient Hill Country overnight option from the city. Pedernales River access for swimming, solid shaded sites under the live oaks, and excellent backroads in every direction. Fills fast on July weekends. Reserve through texas.reserveworld.com. Enchanted Rock State Natural Area (Fredericksburg, TX) Day-use only (no overnight camping at the rock itself) but worth including as a mid-ride destination on the featured route this month. The granite dome rising 425 feet above the Hill Country is one of the more dramatic landmarks in Texas and the views from the summit are worth the hike. July Camping Tips Texas state park reservations go through texas.reserveworld.com. Garner especially fills months out for July weekends; reserve immediately Arrive at waterfront parks before noon and get in the river; plan all activities around the water until 5pm Pack for overnight humidity; even at elevation in the Hill Country, July nights stay warm Carry extra water for the rides in. The Garner approach through Uvalde County has limited services

July Riding Tips: Central Texas Peak Summer EditionAustin in July requires the same discipline as every year. The window is narrow and the consequences of ignoring it are real: 6am departure is the target. The Hill Country roads north and west of Austin before 8am are a completely different experience from midday; the heat index climbs fast once the sun is up and direct Afternoon storms build over the Hill Country between 1–3pm and push east toward Austin between 3–5pm; check radar before heading west after noon and plan your return window accordingly The FM road network through Burnet, Llano, and Mason Counties runs noticeably cooler than the Austin metro in the early morning. Elevation and vegetation both help; use those roads as long as possible before returning through the heat of the city Mesh gear with maximum ventilation is non-negotiable in July; there is no comfortable alternative for sustained triple-digit riding in Central Texas Carry more water than you think you need. The FM road network through Llano County has limited services; know where your fuel and water stops are before you leave

Legal Corner: What To Do After a Motorcycle AccidentIf you’re in a crash: Move to safety. Call 911 and file a police report. Take photos, gather witness info, and keep all paperwork. Texas is an at-fault state—know your insurance rights and required coverage[13][14].
Key Texas Motorcycle Laws: Helmets required for riders under 21; riders 21+ may ride without a helmet if they have completed a safety course or have sufficient health insurance (proof required)[13][14]. Eye protection required unless the bike has a windscreen. Lane splitting is illegal. Motorcycle endorsement (Class M) required on your driver’s license[15].
