⭐ Featured Ride: The Driftwood BBQ & Hill Country Twisties Loop

Distance: ~90 miles | Time: 3–4 hours | Difficulty: Easy (all riders)

Route Overview:
Start in Austin → head southwest toward Driftwood → ride the Hill Country roads through Wimberley → loop back toward Dripping Springs → return to Austin.

Why Ride It in February:

  • Cooler temps = comfortable all-day riding

  • Hill Country views pop in winter light

  • Perfect for a half-day escape with great stops

Must-Stop Highlights:

  • Driftwood BBQ – the perfect rider gathering spot

  • Scenic overlook near Wimberley – pull off for photos

  • Coffee or bakery in Dripping Springs – warm up before heading back

Pro Tip: Watch for Texas cold fronts—mornings can feel like winter even when afternoons are warm. Plan for layers and ride midday on cold-front days.

🧰 Bike Care: Get Ready for Spring

February is a great time to check these items, even if you're riding regularly:

Do Weekly:

  • Check tire pressure (especially during cold fronts—1 PSI per 10°F change is common)

  • Inspect tread for uneven wear

Do This Month:

  • Clean and lubricate chain (or inspect belt)

  • Check brake pads and brake fluid level

  • Test lights and signals (sunset still comes early)

  • Check coolant level (yes, it matters in winter too)

  • Clean bugs, grime, and limestone dust—protect metal parts from moisture

Bonus Tip: If you ride right after rain, rinse your bike later. Hill Country grime and limestone dust build up fast.

🏍 Did You Know? Texas Riding Facts

  • Tire pressure drops fast when temperatures swing. Rule of thumb: 1 PSI per 10°F change. Check before every ride during cold fronts.

  • Hill Country roads get slick after rain because of limestone dust and mud runoff. Slow down 10% on damp roads, especially through corners.

  • Wind gusts push you around in open Texas country—particularly near bridges and wide-open ranch areas. Keep a relaxed grip and use smooth inputs.

  • Even "warm" winter rides cause dehydration. Texas sun drains you faster than you think—bring water.

🏕 Moto Camping Spots to Plan For Spring

Fresh camping ideas for planning your spring trips:

Pedernales Falls State Park
Perfect Hill Country camping ride with great roads, beautiful scenery, and relaxing campsites.

Inks Lake State Park
Worth the ride for lakeside campsites and some of the best early-season scenery in Central Texas.

Bastrop State Park

Pine forest vibes close to Austin—great for an easy weekend overnight.

Packing Tip: February nights can get cold fast—bring a warm sleeping layer, gloves, and a windproof jacket for early morning coffee rides.

🌬 February Riding Tips for Austin Riders

  • Ride midday on cold-front days – warmer pavement means better traction

  • Watch for limestone dust and slick patches after rain—Hill Country specialty

  • Dress in layers – Texas temps can swing 20°+ in hours

  • Increase following distance on cold mornings

  • Avoid shaded corners early – condensation can linger on pavement

  • Wear sunscreen – yes, even in February

  • Stay hydrated – dry winter air dehydrates you faster than you think
