Built to Scale Series: From Centralized Decisions to Distributed Authority

If every important decision still flows through the owner, growth will slow — no matter how capable the team.

Distributed authority isn’t about letting go. It’s about redefining control so decisions happen closer to the information, within clear constraints.

Part 5 of Susan Kearney's Built to Scale series explores why centralized decision-making becomes a bottleneck — and how owners must redesign authority to grow enterprise value.

Event Recap

FSU Capital Market Readiness Course

To help founders/owners digest the latest industry information about today’s capital markets, in conjunction with Florida State University’s Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship and a consortium of expert faculty, Newport’s West Coast team conducted this seminar in Irvine, California across two days in May.

The course is designed to deliver a sophisticated level of understanding of the “New Normal” in capital markets to founders, owners and CEOs of middle market companies who are planning a financial transaction and/or company transition.

Developed and led by Newport Chairman Doug Tatum, the attending group of owners were trained in the course material by subject experts from RSM Accounting, Wells Fargo Wealth Management, Stradling Law, Boyden Recruiting, FFB Commercial Bank, Founders Bank Investment Bank, and P/E firms Caltius and Corbel Capital.

Attendees uniformly praised the course due to the depth of material as well as the interaction between themselves and the faculty, giving such comments as “This is vital information I have been trying to find in pieces, and here it is in one seminar – Can I attend again to ensure I’ve learned it?” Several consortium members have received referrals/inquiries from attendees for their services.

The course will be hosted in other Newport regions during the course of the year.
