August 2026

Dear circle,

I'm writing to you on the tail end of a summer rich with reconnecting — old traditions, old friends — and with doubling down on the deep work of staying present to culture change.

One of the most humbling parts of this self-governance work, this slow work of maturing into a responsible adult, is discovering that the coping mechanisms that carried me my whole life simply don't work anymore. There's a reckoning in that — seeing your life as it actually is, not as you hoped it would be.

I've come to understand this as the inside becoming the outside. For me, that means the parts of myself I used to conceal, keep subterranean, the awkward and hard parts, now live on the outside. My heart, literally, on my sleeve. The choices of my ancestors, the choices of my parents, and my own choices across this lifetime — all laid bare, witnessed by myself and by you.

This, to me, is the true reconciliation: when what's inside is finally seen on the outside.

As we head into the last stretch of summer, I want you to know that if any of this resonates, you are not alone. Our greatest opportunity for belonging is to share our vulnerabilities with people we trust. Lisa, a teacher with the Wholehearted Choir, reminded me of this at retreat last week — the importance of confession, of naming the awkward thoughts and worries, the fear that we're not doing it right, with someone we love and trust.

Let's keep bringing our insides to the outside.

Thank you for all the ways you help hold and grow the energy of this work.

With care, Maija

NEW BOOK COMING SOON: From the Triangle to the Circle: Matriarchal Governance

A groundbreaking governance toolkit for attorneys, peacemakers, and organizational leaders ready to move from hierarchy to circle.

"The triangle is not a neutral design. It is a choice, and it has an alternative."

For those who have looked honestly at the governance structures they inhabit and felt, with some persistent part of themselves, that there must be another way. There is.

This book shows you a way to build it.

Matriarchal Governance series

From naming what matriarchy actually means to untangling hierarchy from circular governance, this series moves through the documents that ground this work, the hard practice of hospicing what no longer serves us, and the deeper letting go required when something is bigger than any one person or generation. This is your invitation to join the circle that's emerging:

Modern Matriarch Highlight:

Janet Alkire

This month we are proud to highlight Modern Matriarch Janet Alkire, as this year marks the 10th anniversary of the Standing Rock resistance.

Alkire's governance work invites us to imagine leadership rooted in relationship, accountability to community, and a willingness to build bridges without abandoning the people you serve. She is someone who communicates across reservations — the circle in motion, not the triangle. She held an unflinching line against the Dakota Access Pipeline, fighting on behalf of water, sovereignty, and the next seven generations. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe continues its fight in and out of courtrooms — a reminder that matriarchal governance isn't ceremonial. It shows up, day after day, in the hardest rooms.

When Janet Alkire was sworn in as Chairwoman of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in November 2021, she wasn't running to win — she was running to give her people a choice. A woman had never been elected to serve as chair, and Alkire entered a field of candidates not to beat the men beside her, but to offer something different. A 15-year veteran of the United States Air Force and great-great-granddaughter of Chief Rain In The Face, she brought to the role a deeply matriarchal orientation distilled into two words — truth and compassion — and she spent four years proving that those aren't soft values, they're structural ones.
