Why Proactive Living Matters

Education on Aging for All Ages

A Word from the Editor

This September was a full circle moment for me.

While visiting family in Poland, I returned to the very place where I had my childhood bike accident. I was six years old when I lost consciousness and was carried home by strangers. We didn’t have trauma centers or care teams like we do at Rady Children's Hospital—luckily for me my accident was not nearly as serious as Declan's.

I also saw firsthand how social connection, movement, and purpose still guide daily life. I watched 80-year-olds recovering from hip surgeries walk to the local store, garden, host neighbors for tea, and enjoy every day. It wasn’t just inspiring—it was a powerful reminder that longevity isn’t just about adding years—it’s about staying engaged, connected, and prepared.

Shortly after returning home, Ted and I attended the Grateful Grand Rounds at Rady Children’s Hospital, where we met Declan and the incredible team that saved his life after a severe bike accident. Then we joined the Stein Institute for Research on Aging and UCSD Center for Healthy Aging for their 7th Symposium, which echoed everything I had just witnessed in Poland: a proactive lifestyle not only improves our chances of a longer life—it dramatically improves how we recover when life throws the unexpected our way.

At Retirement in Reverse and Senior Life Source, we help individuals and families do just that—plan ahead, stay flexible, and use their resources wisely. Whether it's unlocking home equity for care needs or finding a retirement community that supports aging with dignity and joy, we're here to walk beside you—not just react in moments of crisis.

Let’s keep choosing connection. Let’s keep choosing preparation.
