Education on Aging for All Ages

A Word from the Editor

Earlier this month, my husband and I hiked up San Jacinto. As always, he was focused on reaching the peak—powering forward with mission-like clarity. I took a different approach: steady pacing, soaking in the views, staying hydrated, and making sure I had enough fuel to finish strong.

That hike reminded me a lot of how we navigate our days. Many of us—especially in the financial world—are sprinting from one task to the next, laser-focused on outcomes. But without taking moments to pause, nourish ourselves, and reflect, we risk burning out before reaching our goals.

That’s why I found this month’s Webinar on Philanthropy and Charitable Giving so refreshing. It was a powerful pause—a chance to reflect on how we show up for others and create lasting impact. We were honored to host Melinda Forstey and Dave Ricks from Serving Seniors, for an insightful discussion on the role of philanthropy in supporting older adults.

They reminded us that giving isn’t just about money—it’s about intention. Understanding real needs—like housing, nutrition, and connection for seniors. Offering time, skills, and advocacy where it counts. Collaborating across sectors to create real, lasting change.

Melinda’s passion is infectious, and her work is a beacon of what’s possible when we care with purpose.

This conversation couldn’t have come at a better time. I recently completed the Trusted Charitable Advisor (TCA) program with the Jewish Community Foundation San Diego, under the incredible guidance of Sharleen Wollach.

The program deepened my understanding of how charitable strategies—when thoughtfully crafted—can support both community and client goals. Done right, philanthropy becomes a way to pass down values, preserve legacy, and offer a meaningful story of who we are.

Whether we’re climbing mountains, building financial plans, or creating charitable legacies—the path is best walked with intention, care, and a clear view of the impact we hope to leave behind.

Let’s keep climbing, together.
