Preparing Wyoming for the Future

In today’s rapidly evolving digital economy, an accessible skilled workforce is more important than ever. The Wyoming Innovation Partnership (WIP) is at the forefront of efforts to develop digital infrastructure and technology education across the state. Recognizing the critical need for training in this area, the WIP has made significant strides to ensure Wyoming is well-positioned to thrive in a technology-driven future.

Pioneering Digital Education

A prime example of these efforts is the establishment of the School of Computing at the University of Wyoming (UW). The School of Computing is more than just a new academic department—it’s a hub of innovation and learning that reflects the WIP’s commitment to excellence in education. Through a combination of hands-on experience, cutting-edge technology, and a curriculum designed to meet the needs of the digital economy, it’s preparing students to become the tech leaders of tomorrow.

By integrating digital skills training into the education system at all levels, including K-12 outreach, the WIP is helping to ensure that Wyoming students are both equipped with the knowledge they need to succeed and inspired to pursue careers in technology. This initiative is key to creating a sustainable, high-tech workforce that can drive the state’s economy forward.

Expanding Opportunities Statewide

Western Wyoming Community College (WWCC) and Laramie County Community College (LCCC) are also redeveloping their programs to address emerging technological fields. LCCC is focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) in collaboration with industry partners and local school districts, while WWCC has established an Associates of Applied Science in Cybersecurity. Both programs launched this fall and have already garnered significant student interest.

The software development program at Sheridan College, initially launched in Phase I, provides students across Wyoming with pathways into high-demand technology careers. This program’s offerings will soon extend to Central Wyoming College, WWCC, and Northwest Wyoming College. Additionally, UW is offering students options for both two-year and four-year degree tracks.

Established in Phase I, the Wyoming Data Hub at UW continues to expand. WIP backing has made recruiting a research scientist and library staff, along with developing an external website, possible for the Hub, further extending its reach beyond institutional confines. Mini-grants for data projects and investments in advanced instrumentation equipment have made it a key element of the WIP’s efforts to build and strengthen a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in Wyoming, enriching decision-making processes within state agencies.
