Put Your Brain in Check

One of the biggest safety risks we face is not always the obvious hazard in front of us. Sometimes, it is the habit we have stopped questioning.

Think about driving. Most of us learned to keep our hands at 10 and 2, stay focused, and watch the road. But over time, the brain starts taking shortcuts. We eat. Answer the phone. Change the radio. Think about everything except the road in front of us.

The brain is designed to save energy — but in safety-sensitive work, autopilot can become dangerous.

On the job, routine tasks can create the same trap. When we have done something hundreds of times, we can stop seeing the risk. That is why worker health is not only physical. It is mental, emotional, and situational.

This week — pause and ask:

1

Am I fully present?

2

Am I relying on habit instead of awareness?

3

Do I need to slow down, reset, or speak up?
