Flavia Thornson

What is your occupation?

I am a Nurse Practitioner specializing in medical aesthetic treatments. I have worked in medical aesthetics for 19 years.

Hobbies/Interests?

My hobbies are #1 traveling. I want to visit as many places as I possibly can before I die. I have been to 25 of the 50 states and 25 countries. I would have more on my list if I didn't go to Brazil every year. #2 Cooking! #3 Photography. I have never taken a class but I have always taken amazing pictures since I was a child. #4 Studying different things and different languages.

Tell CFD something we may not know about you?

Something most people don't know about me is that I think like a man! I have been told this many times by the people who know me best! I am practical, pragmatic, a problem solver and I avoid drama at all costs.

When did you start Crossfitting?

I started Crossfit 12 years ago. I had always worked out and had been contemplating CF for a couple of years but didn't think I could do it. One day, I walked into CFD and joined. I told myself that I was not allowed to quit for at least 3 months. Even if I couldn't do it, even if I hated it, I did not give myself permission to quit before 3 months. I was hooked the first week!

What do you like most about CFD?

Absolutely the community! I always say CFD is my second family (especially since my family is not here). The members and the coaches are some of the most amazing people I have met! Nobody suffers alone! No matter how much someone is struggling at the end, everyone is there for you until the last minute.

What was your 1st CrossFit workout?

I honestly cannot remember. I just remember have to stop twice because I thought I was going to vomit.

In what ways has Crossfit changed your life?

I taught me that our bodies can do amazing things if we give it a chance and that I am stronger than I ever imagined. It also eventually taught me the humility to accept that I can no longer do some of the things I was able to do before and to accept my limitations. It is better to less and keep going, than to injure myself and not be able to go back! As long as my little legs will get me there, I will never stop!

Favorite workout/movement?

Favorite movements are definitely deadlifts, rowing, power cleans, and anything with a kettle bell.

Least favorite workout/movement?

Least Favorite? Need I say it? RUNNING! And overhead squats.

Any advice you would give to the newbies?

My best advice is leave you pride outside and don't compare yourself to anyone. There will always be someone better! Just be better than you were yesterday. Listen to your body and just keep showing up!

What is your occupation?

I’m a dentist, and my husband and I own Armus Mechanical, our family HVAC and plumbing company. If your heating guy never calls you back, good news, I know a guy. I married him. Find me at the gym or at www.armusmech.net.

Hobbies/Interests?

I love traveling, snowboarding, trying new places and experiences with my husband Edward, staying active, and pretty much anything sports related. Outside the gym, I also volunteer at a local animal shelter.

Tell CFD something we may not know about you.

I moved from Colombia to the U.S. exactly three years ago, and learning a new language while rebuilding my career has been one of the biggest challenges and proudest accomplishments of my life.

When did you start Crossfitting?

I first tried CrossFit in Colombia around 2022, but I wasn’t very consistent. Since joining CFD in 2024, it’s become part of my routine and something I genuinely look forward to every morning.

What do you like most about CFD?

Definitely the community! I love my 6 a.m. class because they make waking up that early totally worth it. The coaches are amazing, encouraging, and always push me to be better.

What was your 1st CrossFit workout?

I think it involved power cleans. That’s honestly all I remember!

In what ways has CrossFit changed your life?

CrossFit has completely changed the way I see myself and what I’m capable of. If you had told me a year ago that I’d be doing some of the movements I can do today, I never would have believed you. It’s made me stronger, more confident, and taught me that progress comes from showing up consistently. A huge thank you to Coach Robert for believing in me, helping me build my strength, and pushing me to learn skills I never thought I’d be able to do. You’re the best!

What is your favorite workout/movement?

Anything with squats! And I love rope climbs.

Least favorite workout/movement?

Definitely thrusters!

Any advice you would give to the newbies?

Don’t compare yourself to anyone else. Just keep showing up, trust the process, and celebrate the small improvements. One day you’ll surprise yourself by doing things you never thought possible. Everyone starts somewhere, and consistency beats perfection every time.

Mariah Ramos. My occupation is in construction (house remodeling). 2 I love going to Home Depot lol (it's my place to de-stress 3. There are warm-up exercises I didn't know in English, and I had to watch my teammates to learn them. (Sorry, coaches that's a lot of words to write down.) 4. I started in 2018, but I haven't been consistent from 2021 until now. 5. They made me feel like family, and I appreciated the effort the coaches made to help me understand them (because my English is basic). 6. My introduction to CrossFit was with FRAN, with a weight of 75 lbs and strict pull-ups 7. Wow! In many ways, in unimaginable ways, both physically and mentally. And of course, with the hand of God 8. Snatch, ring muscle up, and hand stand push ups 9. I don’t like deadlift, and run 10. Listen to your coaches, progress through movements that are difficult for you, and stretch after every workout.
