Thanksgiving Day "Murph"

Randi Amaral

What is your occupation?
Project Manager at Isaksen Solar

Hobbies/Interests?
Other than CrossFit, I’m actually a homebody. I’ve recently got into reading, love the beach, but nothing beats a Friday night game night or movie night at home with Cole :)

When did you start Crossfitting?
I actually started at the boot camp when Justin and Jason hosted at Buttonwood park in 2012. Then they opened CFD and I’ve been there ever since!

What do you like most about CFD?
My most recent favorite thing about CFD is working out along side my little guy, Cole. He’s my biggest cheerleader and I love that he enjoys it and that he’s learning the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

And of course the community, the friendly competition, I love that people can walk into CFD and be totally welcomed with open arms.

What was your 1st CrossFit workout?
I think my first workout was a Saturday. Jess Caldas was coaching and I was like “why is this girl yelling at everyone” - if you know, you know, lol. The workout had overhead squats and I remember using a training bar and feeling so embarrassed because everyone else seemed super strong.

In what ways has CrossFit changed your life?
Other than meeting the love of my life, CrossFit has kept me consistent with working out. I never stuck to any regimen before. I’ve learned a lot about myself and what I’m capable of. Also, I’ve met some amazing people in the last 10+ years!

Favorite workout/movement?
I love Murph, double unders, pull-ups, hang power cleans and any long chippers!

Least favorite workout/movement?
Overhead squats, snatches, thrusters, FRAN!

Any advice you would give to the newbies?
My biggest piece of advice is to just get in the door! Forget all of the assumptions of what you think CrossFit is. There’s no magic pill and if I’ve learned anything over the last 10+ years it’s that consistency brings results. Have a balance, don’t deprive yourself and trust the process!

Jill Arsenault

What is your occupation?
Right now I am a secretary for my uncle's business. He makes scallop drags for all the scallopers. If you have had fresh scallops locally, there’s a good chance his drag was the one that caught it! 😊

What are your hobbies/interests?
Besides CrossFit, anything outdoors! Kayaking, walks, nature hikes, bike rides, gardening. I also love my “grandma” activities-knitting and reading and I’ve started to learn how to quilt!

Tell CFD something we don’t know about you?
I used to do gymnastics in the same building about 20-25 years ago! During the fall/winter you’ll see me making hot cocoa bombs and selling at local craft fairs 😊

When did you start Crossfitting?
April 2018

What do you like most about CFD?
Being around like-minded people who share a passion of just bettering themselves and wanting to live a healthier lifestyle!

What was your 1st CrossFit workout?
I honestly can’t remember, but I remember wanting to come back for more.

In what ways has CrossFit changed your life?
Besides the obvious of becoming stronger and doing things I never thought I could do. I’ve made some great friends! I never knew Coach Ashley before walking in those doors and she ended up being my maid of honor at my wedding! Just goes to show CrossFit is not just about physical health, but the mental health of finding good people.

Favorite workout/movement?
Running. Though I’d much rather go out for a 3-mile jog than do 200m sprints in a workout. I’ve run 2 half marathons, in recent years! And many 5ks long ago. I also love squat snatches, there’s just something about them.

Least favorite workout/movement?
Thrusters. Does anyone actually like them?

Any advice you would give to newbies?
Never give up and avoid saying "I can't." There's always a way to tailor a workout to your needs. Stick to a consistent schedule, and you'll find that the regulars become your biggest motivators and support system.

CFD welcomes all of our new members!

Here are a few who have agreed to
share a little bit about themselves!

Meet Alexandra Zubillaga!

What is your occupation?

Every time someone asks me this, I let out a little sigh and laugh because I can't give a simple, straightforward answer haha. Due to the differences in systems and policies in each state, I'm a clinical psychologist in Venezuela, but here in the U.S., I'm more like a mental health worker.

How long have you been doing CrossFit?

Before joining CFD, I had never tried CrossFit. I started with you all in March, and I'm thrilled with the results. From day one, you can see changes, which is perfect for those of us who don't have the patience to wait forever to see progress (like me). The post-workout feeling is so rewarding that it keeps me coming back for more.

What brought you to CFD?

Honestly, the need to try something new and the boring monotony of a regular gym… I love sports, challenges, and anything that demands more strength of character from me. And of course, overcoming that "I want to die" feeling that hits within the first 5 minutes of warm-up from our beloved coaches already makes me feel like I've done 3 years of personal growth, no joke. Plus, meeting new people and getting a bit more familiar with the culture is important to me in this immigration process… except when I go to the 6 AM classes, haha. At that time, my social battery is completely drained. (My respect to all who manage to stay consistent at that hour).

What are your hobbies and interests?

Wow, where do I even start? I have so many hobbies and interests that I think one day they'll all turn into my professional occupations, and I'll end up working in my current profession just as a hobby. For a while, I was a professional makeup artist because I love the whole fashionista world. I'd like to get licensed as an esthetician so I can practice it here in the U.S. I'm also a Zumba instructor because I've loved dancing since I was 3 years old (it's in my blood). I used to do Pole fitness regularly in my country and I'm still fascinated by it. When I'm not too busy, I still practice it. As for interests, I love traveling, eating delicious food, spending time with my family, visiting stores to try on different outfits, and, of course, taking cool pictures during all of the above.

What’s something unique about you that most people don’t know?

The first thing is that I'm passionate about including God in everything I do and spending time seeking Him. Another thing, which isn't so unique but definitely funny, is that I'm super sensitive to sounds and textures.

Meet Eric Griva!

What is your occupation?

Seafood Quality Control Manager

How long have you been doing CrossFit?

I’ve been doing Crossfit about a month and a half.

What brought you to CFD?

My buddy (Chad Lague) would always tell me I would love Crossfit. I have always worked out but would get bored or complacent. I needed a reason to push myself.

What are your hobbies and interests?

I play a lot of golf. I enjoy reading. I love to play basketball. I like taking my old dog to play fetch or for walks.

What’s something unique about you that most people don’t know?

Tough one…hmmm….I was the victim of an armed robbery while using an ATM when I was a child.

Meet Sam Olsen!

What is your occupation?

I'm a sports medicine physical therapist. My specialty is runners, strength and endurance athletes. Recently I opened my own practice in New Bedford called Cornerstone Performance and Physical Therapy.

How long have you been doing CrossFit?

I first tried Crossfit over 6 years ago when I lived in Winthrop, MA and only just started up again this August.

What brought you to CFD?

I've been a runner for a long time, but have always struggled with building strength and power. I decided to join Crossfit because I wanted to be a stronger runner and to get stronger overall to stay healthy and help keep me from getting injured.

What are your hobbies and interests?

My main hobby is running, but I also like hiking and skiing in the winter and would love to travel out west more. I'm always looking for a good book too if anyone has recommendations!

What’s something unique about you that most people don’t know?

I like to knit as a means of stress management. I actually find it very mindful and it helps to calm anxiety.

Shout out to Coaches Emily and Jason Burnett for repping CFD to the fullest at the Amoskeag Classic!
