Nolan Bernier

What is your Occupation?
I am a Chef by trade but work as a Health Inspector for the town of Seekonk.  The most common question I am asked is if I have shut restaurants down…yes, but not for fun.

Hobbies/Interests
Pretending I’m good at golf, playing with my dog, and traveling.  Jaime and I have visited 16 countries together.

Tell CFD something we don’t know about you.
During high school, my first job was as a lifeguard.

When did you start Crossfitting?
I saw the Games on TV in 2016 and thought, “That’s cool, I'd like to try it.” I officially signed up in 2017; I’ve been a member at a couple different gyms while working in the Boston-area.  I’ve been at CFD since the gym re-opened the doors after Covid.

What do you like most about CFD?
The members, hands down; I’ve met some best friends here. The friendly banter and competitive nature is fun; even from Paulo. I love that Jaime is also a member because it’s great to share the same hobby with your spouse and work on our goals together.

What was your 1st CrossFit workout?
Right after Foundations, I was thrown into 17.4. I had no idea what the Open was and why it was important. I knew I wanted to do well, so naturally I did as any 24-year old would do and completed all 55 deadlifts unbroken. I ended up gassing out to the point of doing singles on wall ball reps. I don’t think I even made it through the rowing part.

In what ways has CrossFit changed your life?
There will be setbacks in life, but you shouldn’t let that deter you as the comeback will be even better.  After my pec-repair surgery, I was out for quite a while.  That major setback motivated me, and I have become the strongest I’ve been.  It’s also like therapy; if I miss a day at the gym, it definitely affects my mood.

Favorite Workout/movement
Dumbbell snatches, anything heavy barbell, and the assault bike.

Least Favorite Workout/movement
Running, burpees…cardio.

Any advice you would give to newbies?
Show up and be consistent; if you're sore, come back the next day.  Don’t skip reps or use poor form just to place on the leaderboard; you’re only cheating yourself.

What is your Occupation?
I work for Cellular Sales (Verizon). I work as the head of their New England training team. I oversee new hire training and all levels of sales skill training.

What are your hobbies/interests?
Spending time with family, friends and my amazing wife Meghan. I love sports whether it is playing or watching them.I look forward to doing competitive events like 5ks, 10ks and OCR races .My greatest joy is when I get my family or friends to join me on races and OCRs. I love seeing people accomplish something they thought they couldn’t.

Tell CFD something we don’t know about you?
Well as anyone who follows me on Facebook or Instagram knows I am an open book lol. Something that will probably surprise some people is a big reason I started Crossfit was because in October (2023) I had a week-long panic attack and was dealing with severe anxiety. My therapist said group exercise and being social may help. Thank God it did and I am doing great now thanks in big part to crossfit and the support of my family, friends and wife.

When did you start Crossfitting?
I started crossfit in late October 2023.

What do you like most about CFD?
The community is by far the greatest thing about crossfit. I have never been around so many people who honestly just want you to do better and are willing to help you get better. The coaches are amazing teachers and motivators but so is everyone else in the gym. There is always someone who is helping push you, give you instructions and help. Shout out to Shondee because I asked her a million questions since I started and she has answered them all lol

What was your 1st CrossFit workout?
My 1st workout Justin was the instructor in a morning class. I believe it was handstand push ups (Couldn’t do) and kettlebell swings for the workout. I was spent during the warm up though lol. Justin really helped me scale, gave me a ton of instruction and showed me crossfit is for everyone if you're willing to put the work in. Plus Kerry and Nichole crushed the workout like they were superheroes and I wanted to be able to do that too lol.

In what ways has CrossFit changed your life?
It has drastically improved my mental health and physically I am healthier then I have been in 15 years. 2 years ago I weighed in at 290 lbs and since lost 75 lbs but after a year and a half of lifting I started to get bored and started to gain back weight and that's when crossfit relit my love of working out. I love walking into the gym everyday seeing friends and working with them towards a common goal of us all getting better together. I owe a lot to crossfit and our crossfit community because of all the joy, health and happiness it brings me. So thank you all!

Favorite Workout/movement?
Power Cleans and deadlift - My back does not always agree but it is what it is lol

Least Favorite Workout/movement?
This is easy…. Burpee’s! I hate every second of them. I hate them so much I decided to set a goal at the end of April to do 10,000 by the end of the year. I believe if I can get through that goal there is nothing I can’t do lol … Also shout out to Suzanne V. she joined me on the 10,000 burpee journey and is crushing it!

Any advice you would give to newbies?
The advice I get regularly from Emilly, Michelle and Ashley is great advice. Stay on your heels, don’t always just muscle up the weight and watch your form lol. Seriously though the best advice I can give as a new person is enjoy it. Enjoy doing the stuff you're already great at and enjoy learning and getting better at the stuff you struggle with. No one is judging you here and everyone is here to help you. Let them!
