If you've worked with me, you know I don't get pulled into emotional reactions very often. But even as a healer, I still have my own layers to uncover. Healing isn't about never being triggered—it's about recognizing the trigger, understanding what it's trying to show you, and choosing not to let it define you.
With Mercury Retrograde beginning, communication has felt especially distorted, and I certainly felt it in my own life.
A trigger can feel like a tidal wave. Sometimes it's a small ripple of emotion, and other times it crashes over you with incredible force. This one hit me hard. I could feel it settling into my body, and it stayed with me through the night, making it difficult to rest.
The next morning, instead of pushing it away, I sat with it.
I looked the shadow directly in the eye and asked:
"What are you trying to teach me?"
Triggers Are Mirrors
A trigger isn't your enemy.
It's a mirror.
It reflects the emotional wounds, beliefs, and stories that are still asking to be healed.
As I sat with mine, two themes surfaced almost immediately:
Betrayal
Initially, I thought I was reacting to a current situation. But as I traced the feeling back to its origin, I realized it wasn't about today at all.
Years ago, I loaned my car to a friend during an emergency. When it was returned, I discovered it had been totaled. When I asked what had happened, instead of honesty, I was met with anger and blame. That friendship ended, and I was left with a $10,000 loss because I had removed the vehicle from my insurance the day before.
The emotion I felt today wasn't really about the present.
It was the unresolved feeling of betrayal still living in my body.
Scarcity
The second layer surprised me.
Underneath the betrayal was a familiar belief:
"I'm not supported."
"There won't be enough."
Our nervous system often reaches for these old stories whenever we feel threatened.
But once I acknowledged them, they began to lose their power.
Awareness Changes Everything
As I unpacked the emotions, I recognized the lessons hiding beneath them.
I needed stronger boundaries.
I needed clearer communication.
I needed to trust that there is always enough.
Instead of attaching to the emotion, I simply observed it.
This is something I remind my clients often:
Don't become your shadow.
Notice it.
Thank it for showing you something important.
Then choose when and how you'll work through it instead of letting it control your day.
I'm Seeing This Everywhere
Interestingly, many of my clients have been navigating similar experiences recently.
One client was excitedly sharing a positive life change with a family member. She felt aligned, inspired, and trusted everything was unfolding perfectly.
One conversation later, someone questioned her choices.
Immediately, anger surfaced.
Another client began sharing how energy work had helped her establish healthy boundaries for the first time in her life. Instead of support, she received criticism.
Suddenly she felt deflated, defensive, and doubted herself.
Neither situation was really about what was said.
Both situations activated an older emotional wound.
The conversation simply became the doorway.
Your Tribe Matters
One of the biggest lessons I've learned is this:
Not everyone deserves access to your dreams.
Not everyone deserves front-row seats to your healing.
Your tribe won't make you justify your growth.
They won't question your worth.
They won't require you to defend becoming the healthiest version of yourself.
They'll simply say,
"I'm proud of you."
"Keep going."
"How can I support you?"
I've been incredibly grateful for the soul friends who have reminded me of that this week.
How I Worked Through It
Here's exactly what helped me move through this trigger:
• I sat quietly and asked the shadow what it wanted me to see.
• I traced the emotion back to its original source.
• I cut energetic cords connected to that memory and released the emotional attachments.
• I journaled everything I was feeling and burned the pages as a symbolic release.
• I focused on gratitude and the people who genuinely support my growth.
• I cleared the remaining energetic residue from my body so the emotion no longer needed to live there.
The more consistently we work through our triggers, the less power they have over us.
Eventually, they become moments of awareness instead of emotional avalanches.
Because here's the truth:
Ignoring your shadows doesn't make them disappear.
It simply compresses them until one day they overflow.
