Early evidence suggests that postmenopausal women who combine a GLP-1 medication (like semaglutide/Wegovy/Ozempic or tirzepatide/Zepbound) with hormone replacement therapy (HRT) lose more weight and hit key milestones (5–20% total body weight loss) more often than on a GLP-1 alone. This mirrors what we see at Nurturing You.
What the study found
A 2024 Mayo Clinic–led retrospective study in Menopause followed postmenopausal women on semaglutide for 12 months. Those also on HRT lost ~30% more total body weight and were more likely to reach 5%, 10%, and 20% loss than women using semaglutide alone. Both groups improved cardiometabolic markers (glucose, lipids, blood pressure), with greater gains in the combo group. (Note: not a randomized trial; evidence is still emerging.)
Why the combo may help
Multiple mechanisms: GLP-1s curb appetite and regulate blood sugar; HRT supports hormonal balance and may improve insulin sensitivity and body composition.
“Meno belly” support: Menopause shifts fat toward the abdomen; GLP-1s help reduce central adiposity.
Lifestyle lift: By easing hot flashes, sleep issues, and low mood, HRT can make it easier to stay consistent with nutrition, movement, and recovery—habits that amplify GLP-1 results.
Does GLP-1 work only after menopause?
No. Analyses of SURMOUNT trials show GLP-1–class medications deliver substantial weight loss across reproductive stages—pre-, peri-, and postmenopause. HRT may augment results in postmenopause for eligible women.
What we see at Nurturing You
When appropriate, patients on both therapies often lose weight more steadily, protect lean mass alongside strength training and protein goals, and report better sleep and energy—factors that reinforce sustainable progress. (Individual results vary; plans are personalized.)
Safety & next steps
The combination isn’t right for everyone. We’ll review your health history, risks, and preferences; discuss non-hormonal options; and set up monitoring (lipids, A1c, BP) and a lifestyle plan to support long-term success.
