What's New in Port Wentworth!

City Council Updates

Councilwoman Nelson

As we stride confidently through the calendar year, it's invigorating to reflect on our accomplishments thus far. Our recent partnership with the Savannah Ghost Pirates marks a significant step forward as we set sail on the construction of their training facility, further enriching our city's landscape. Moreover, I am thrilled to announce that for the second consecutive year, Port Wentworth has received a clean financial audit, a testament to our steadfast commitment to fiscal responsibility and transparency.

Habitat for Humanity and the amazing work they do is servant leadership in action!  In collaboration with Chatham County government, I was excited to see several community conversations take place over the last several months that have led to an initiative that everyone has made adjustments for! I believe that everyone is entitled to the American Dream of home ownership and look forward to downtown Port Wentworth being a new home for many. Our dedication to fostering inclusivity and prosperity within our community shined brightly through initiatives such as the well-attended Black History Month celebration and the introduction of a CAT bus route, enhancing accessibility and opportunities for all residents.  The City has now implemented a new parking ordinance and hosted a curbside bulk trash pickup day. Thanks to collaborative efforts with Senator Derek Mallow, our city's hotel motel tax has been increased to 8%, ensuring a steady influx of revenue for the beautification projects that embellish our beloved cityscape. As we continue to build upon these foundations, it fills me with immense pride to witness the groundbreaking of a new Fire Station, strategically positioned at the forefront of our newest park, symbolizing our unwavering commitment to safety and progress.

Additionally, the City Manager and Economic Development Director were featured in Georgia Trend magazine calling attention to the city and I was highlighted in Georgia Municipal Associations Georgia's Cities magazine to discuss my journey as an emerging leader in the region. As we march forward, united in purpose and determination, I am deeply honored to serve as your councilwoman and steward of this thriving city.

Happy Spring and what a beautiful time it is in Port Wentworth, and that goes beyond just the weather!

As your City Councilman, I'm thrilled to share with you some exciting developments in Port Wentworth. Over the last year, and since joining the Council in January, our city has experienced significant growth and economic advancement, making it an increasingly vibrant place to live, work, and play. To guide our future planning, we commissioned the Here's a summary of some key highlights from the report:

  • Population: Port Wentworth's population is approximately 13,000 residents, a significant increase from earlier reports.

  • Median Age and Income: The median age in our city is 35, and the median household income is $89,000.

  • Education: Approximately 34% of our residents have some college education, and 19% hold a graduate or professional degree.

  • Age Demographics: The majority of our adult residents fall within the 18-54 age range, with nearly 4,000 people between the ages of 35 and 54.

  • Real Estate Trends: Since 2018, home sale prices have risen by nearly $100,000, with the current average at about $275,000. This significant increase hasn't yet factored in the upcoming Hyundai plant, Ghost Pirates training facility, or ongoing city infrastructure investments.

  • Rental Market: Rent prices in Port Wentworth have also risen, averaging around $1,600 per month after the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Retail Dynamics: Demand in Port Wentworth slightly exceeds supply overall, with unmet needs in building materials and general merchandise. Clothing and grocery stores are slightly overrepresented, but with the city's rapid growth, this may not remain an issue for long.

These insights represent only a glimpse into the dynamic future of Port Wentworth. I invite you to visit our website next month for the full report and to stay tuned for more economic development updates in our newsletter. Please share this information with anyone seeking a new adventure in a fast-growing and thriving city.

Thank you for your continued support, and let's work together to build an even better Port Wentworth.

Councilman Stephens

Just got back from the ceremonial groundbreaking of Fire station 3 & PWFD Headquarters, off Highway 30 in what will be Anchor Park.  This was a great and historic day for Chief Moore, members of the PWFD, Steve Davis, our City Staff and our city.  This is yet another investment in our critical infrastructure. For far too long and way too many ways, our city has invested in our infrastructure.  That is beginning to change within the city and especially on the North side of Port Wentworth.

When completed, the Fire Station/Headquarters will be the first on the North side of town and will aide in the growth of our city.  As our city continues to grow and thrive we will need additional facilities like this to better serve our citizens.  Some of the benefits this new station will provide markedly improved response times for fire/paramedics, (given the circumstances, this could literally mean life or death), lower homeowners insurance rates for those close to the station and greater peace of mind for our citizenry.  There are several more projects in our pipeline that will improve the quality of life for all of Port Wentworth.
