Public safety remains one of the top concerns I hear from District 4 residents — including questions about EMS response times, crime prevention, and emergency preparedness.

In this month’s Chakira’s Corner, I spoke with DeKalb County’s new Director of Public Safety, Darnell Fullum, about efforts to strengthen coordination across the County’s public safety agencies. Director Fullum oversees several departments, including Police, Fire Rescue, E-911, Animal Services, the Medical Examiner’s Office, and the DeKalb Emergency Management Agency.

Key updates include a new EMS contract designed to improve ambulance response times, the launch of the County’s Real-Time Crime Center, expanded emergency preparedness efforts through DEMA, and a new Rave emergency alert system that will deliver more targeted notifications to residents.

These initiatives reflect ongoing work to improve service, strengthen coordination, and enhance safety across DeKalb County.

DeKalb County Annual MLK

I was honored to participate in a recent Martin Luther King Jr. Day event, where I had the opportunity to reflect on Dr. King’s legacy and the continued work required to build stronger, more equitable communities.

Dr. King’s message of service, unity, and justice continues to guide the work we do in DeKalb County. Moments like these are a reminder that progress is built through both leadership and community action.

NACo

I recently attended the National Association of Counties (NACo) Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C., joining leaders from across the country to discuss federal policy, funding opportunities, and priorities impacting our communities.

The experience was both informative and energizing, and I returned ready to apply what I learned for DeKalb County. I was especially proud to support and help sponsor the attendance of our DeKalb County Youth Commissioners—providing them with a valuable opportunity to engage, learn, and be part of conversations shaping our future.

I remain focused on advancing policies that move DeKalb forward.

Mentoring Month

In recognition of National Mentoring Month, we honored some of the organizations and programs making a meaningful impact on youth across DeKalb County.

These efforts include:

• Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta

• DeKalb County Police Department PAL Plus Program

• DeKalb County Fire Rescue youth programs, including Explorer Post 901 and Blazing Brave Girls Camp

• DeKalb County Human Services Youth Division programs

• DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office Boys To Men and Girls To Pearls programs

Together, these initiatives serve thousands of young people each year, supporting leadership development, academic success, and positive life outcomes across our community.

Mayors Meeting

I continue to meet regularly with mayors from cities across District 4 to stay aligned on the needs and priorities of our communities.

These meetings provide an opportunity to share updates, identify challenges, and coordinate support across jurisdictions — ensuring we are working together to address issues that impact residents at both the local and county level.

Strong partnerships with our municipal leaders are essential to delivering effective, responsive service, and I remain committed to maintaining open lines of communication as we move District 4 forward.

Community Connection Quarterly

Our February Community Connection Breakfast brought together residents, local leaders, and community partners for updates, resources, and open dialogue in District 4.

Despite a weather-related postponement in January, February’s strong turnout highlighted the community’s commitment to staying informed and engaged. Attendees heard from county leaders, asked questions, and connected with service providers across DeKalb County.

Highlights included:

• Property tax savings information from Tax Commissioner Nicole Golden, with a reminder to apply for homestead exemptions by April 1

• Utility assistance resources, including the Water Rate Assistance Program (WRAP)

• Georgia Power’s Income Qualified Discount program

• MARTA updates on bus route improvements launching in April

Teen Tech

Our office was proud to be represented by Chief of Staff Alesia Brooks at the opening of the Teen Tech Center at Hamilton Recreation Center, supporting an exciting new space designed to give young people access to technology, learning tools, and creative opportunities.

Spaces like this help equip our youth with the skills they need to succeed in today’s digital world while providing a safe and engaging environment for exploration and growth.

Investing in initiatives like the Teen Tech Center reflects Commissioner Chakira Johnson’s continued commitment to youth development and expanding access to opportunity across District 4.

Brenda Gail Lundy

At Tobie Grant Recreation Center, we gathered with community members to recognize the life and legacy of Brenda Gail Lundy, known to many as “Gail,” a dedicated advocate whose impact continues to be felt across Scottdale and District 4.

During the ceremony, a room was formally dedicated in her name in recognition of her lasting contributions, and a proclamation was presented to commemorate her legacy.

Gail’s commitment to community helped shape important spaces like Tobie Grant Recreation Center, and it was meaningful to celebrate her life alongside those who continue to carry that work forward.

Board of Commissioners Pass the 2026 Nearly 1.9 Billion Dollar County Budget

On February 26, 2026, the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners approved the County’s annual operating budget, reinforcing our commitment to delivering essential services and investing in our community.

This budget prioritizes public safety, infrastructure, workforce development, and quality of life, while maintaining responsible financial stewardship.

As Presiding Officer, I appreciate the collaboration of the Board, County leadership, and staff. Together, we will continue making strategic investments that strengthen our neighborhoods and support DeKalb’s long-term success.

Annual Lunar New Year Gala

I was pleased to attend a recent Lunar New Year Gala as a guest of Virgina Rece, City of Tucker COUNCIL MEMBER, POST 2 DISTRICT 1, joining residents in celebrating the new year and the rich cultural traditions that make DeKalb County so vibrant.

Events like this highlight the strength of our diversity and provide meaningful opportunities to connect across cultures and communities. I remain committed to supporting and celebrating the traditions that bring our residents together and make DeKalb a more inclusive place for all.

Women’s History

Commissioner Chakira Johnson joined the Women’s History Program, “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future,” hosted by The Metro Atlanta Club of The National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs, Inc. invited by Chair Lois Mayes Women’s History Committee where she delivered remarks focused on building stronger, more inclusive communities.

In her message, Commissioner Johnson emphasized that leadership is defined by impact and service, highlighting that sustainability extends beyond environmental efforts to include infrastructure, economic opportunity, and social equity.

She underscored the importance of investing in smart growth, maintaining transparency in public resources, and ensuring all residents have access to opportunity. Commissioner Johnson also encouraged women to continue leading with courage, collaboration, and a shared commitment to shaping a better future for the next generation.

Employee Appreciation and Birthday Celebration

Recently, we had the opportunity to come together for a joint celebration recognizing staff and marking a few special occasions, including my birthday.

Moments like these are a reminder of the importance of taking time to connect, reflect, and recognize the contributions of those who help serve our community every day.

I’m grateful for the dedicated team that supports the work we do across District 4, and for the continued commitment to serving our residents with care and professionalism.

Council for the Arts

I was honored to attend the official launch of the DeKalb Council for the Arts, an exciting step forward in strengthening arts, culture, and creative expression across our county.

This new advisory body will help guide policies, partnerships, and investments that support DeKalb’s creative economy and expand opportunities for artists and residents. I’m also proud to have appointed Melanie Hammet, former Mayor of Pine Lake, to represent District 4 and help lead this important work.

The arts play a vital role in building community, driving economic growth, and creating spaces where residents can connect and thrive.
