Why Even Strong Interview Answers Don’t Always Work

Hi {{contact.first_name}},

Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve talked about:

→ why interview answers don’t always land
→ and how to structure them using the USB Method (Frame it → Show it → Connect it)

And for many people, those shifts alone make a real difference.

But there’s another layer that matters just as much,

and it’s often the reason why even strong answers don’t fully work.

You can have:

  • great experience

  • well-structured answers

  • clear, compelling examples

…and still walk out of an interview feeling like something didn’t quite click.

Here’s what’s going on:

Your words and your energy don’t match.

I sometimes describe this as your energetic footprint.

It’s the unspoken communication happening underneath your words.

It’s how you carry yourself.
How certain (or uncertain) you feel.
What you actually believe about your value.

The exhaustion, fear or scarcity from a job search that’s gone on for far too long.

You can say all the “right” things…

But if your energy tells a different story, that’s what people pick up on.

It’s like your music and your lyrics don’t match.

The words might sound right—

but something feels off.

This shows up in subtle ways:

  • you sound slightly hesitant, even when your answer is strong

  • you over-explain instead of trusting your point

  • you try to say what you think they want to hear

  • you shrink or soften your experience without realizing it

  • your frustration leaks out

And here’s the important part:

Interviewers don’t just hear your answers.
They feel them.

So if you’re interviewing for a Director-level role…

…but your energy still feels like a Manager,

no amount of polished answers will fully bridge that gap.

If you’re capable of operating at a higher level…

…but you don’t yet carry yourself that way—

it creates friction.

Even if no one can quite articulate why.

This is why interview preparation isn’t just about your answers.

It’s about your internal state.

Because your presence communicates before your words ever do.

Your energy is shaped by:

  • how you see yourself

  • what you believe about your capabilities

  • how you’ve interpreted past experiences (including rejections)

If you’re carrying:

  • frustration

  • self-doubt

  • lingering disappointment

That comes through, whether you intend it to or not.

So, part of the real work is:

cleaning that up.

Looking at:

  • the beliefs you’re holding

  • the narratives you’ve created about your experience

  • the ways you may be unintentionally minimizing yourself

And then intentionally reshaping those—

so that your energy becomes:

  • clear

  • confident

  • grounded

  • and genuinely compelling

Because when your words and your energy match

something powerful happens.

Your answers feel:

  • more natural

  • more convincing

  • more real

And the interviewer doesn’t have to work to “figure you out.”

They can see you in the role.

They can feel what it would be like to work with you.

Your energy is both attractive and attractional.

That’s when interviews start to shift.

Not just in what you say,

but in how you’re experienced.

This is the piece most people overlook.

And it’s often the real difference between:

being qualified
and
being selected

If you’ve been doing all the right things on paper, but something still feels slightly off,

this is likely the layer.

And it’s absolutely something that can be changed.
