Stop explaining your career. Start telling a story.

Hey friends,

After interviewing repeatedly with no success, a client came to me for help.

On paper, she had an incredible background.
Strong credentials. Great organizations. Meaningful work.

But she kept hearing the same feedback when interviewing:

"Your experience doesn’t fit this role."

She said to me: "I don’t understand it. I know I could do these jobs."

And she probably could have.

The problem wasn't her experience.

The problem was the story.

Her resume read like a timeline.
Her LinkedIn profile looked like a job description.
In interviews, she explained her background… but she wasn't connecting the dots.

Once we reframed her story, everything changed.

Instead of listing roles, she started explaining the pattern in her career — the problems she consistently solves and the value she brings.

Within two months, she landed a role that was both a step up and a better fit.

Same experience.
Different story.
Very different result.

Pillar 5 Tell a Better Story

The Branding & Marketing Pillar

If the earlier pillars are about discovering the work you’re meant to do, Pillar 5 is about communicating it effectively.

This is the branding and marketing part of the equation.

And like any kind of marketing, it requires a shift in perspective.

During the earlier stages of career development — reflection, strengths discovery, values work — you are the hero of the story.

But the moment you step into the marketplace, something important changes.

You are no longer the hero.

Your audience is.

The hiring manager.
The organization.
The team you're hoping to join.

They are the hero of the story.

They have a challenge to solve, a goal to achieve, a problem that needs attention.

Your role is to show them that you are the solution.

Why This Matters

In the real world, it’s rarely the most qualified candidate who gets the opportunity.

More often, it’s the person who communicates their value most clearly.

This shows up everywhere:

• Your resume (where you may have six seconds to capture attention)
• Your LinkedIn profile
• Networking conversations
• Interviews
• Promotion discussions

At every stage, people are asking a simple question:

Why you?

Your story is the answer.

The Real Work of Career Storytelling

Most people approach this backwards.

They explain their background.
They list their roles.
They describe what they’ve done.

But strong career storytelling is about something else entirely.

It’s about connecting the dots of your experience so that other people can immediately see the value you bring.

When your story is clear:

• your career path makes sense — even if it’s unconventional
• your value becomes obvious
• and you show up with much more confidence

Over the years, I’ve watched professionals completely transform their networking conversations and interviews simply by learning to tell their story differently.

Same experience.

Different story.

Very different outcomes.

A Question for Reflection

If someone studied your career over the past 10 years…

What would they conclude you are unusually good at?

That answer is often the starting point for a much stronger career story.

Inside the Career Accelerator and with my 1:1 clients, Pillar 5 is where we do the deeper work of translating your experience into a clear narrative — one that works across your resume, LinkedIn profile, networking conversations, and interviews.

Because your experiences only become powerful when people understand what they mean.

And that begins with the story you tell.

Cheering you on,
