Six smart ways to invest in your future, starting this week

Career Growth in a Shaky Job Market

Hey {{contact.first_name}},

There’s no denying it; the job market is a mess right now.

Even top performers are getting caught in layoffs, restructures, and hiring freezes. It’s unsettling. It’s exhausting. And it’s easy to feel like the ground is shifting beneath your feet.

But here’s the truth:
Your job may be uncertain. Your career is not.

One job can end, often abruptly. But your career? That’s the arc you shape over time. And no one can take that from you.

There are always two jobs you’re doing:

  • Your first job pays the bills. It’s (mostly) urgent and it’s what you were hired to do.

  • Your second job is managing your career. It’s building the skills, relationships, and credibility to shape what’s next. It’s not urgent, but it’s always important.

In a perfect world, your first job supports your second. But even when it doesn’t, your second job is how you future-proof your path forward.

So, whether you’re currently employed, recently let go, or in a long-haul job search, this is your reminder:

You still have power. You still have agency. Your career is intact and deserves your time.

Here are 6 ways to do just that:

1. Put yourself in the room. Yes, even if you’re an introvert. Show up to industry events, talks, and meetups: online or off. People remember people they’ve met. Visibility creates opportunity. Being in shared groups creates trust – a valuable commodity in today’s market.

2. Follow the right voices. Stay connected to thought leaders in your field. Follow them on LinkedIn. Watch what they’re tracking. Stay current with where your industry is headed. Where are the growth edges of your work happening?

3. Tap your existing network with generosity. Message 10 people you’ve worked with. Set up casual chats. Tell them where you’re headed. Ask how you can support them, too. Careers grow in community not isolation.

4. Learn something that lights you up. When you’re learning, you’re in motion. Take a class. Learn a skill. Reignite your curiosity. It’ll do wonders for your mindset and your marketability.

5. Reclaim your story. You are more valuable than you may feel. Ask peers for short recommendations. Refresh your LinkedIn profile. Speak with clarity about what you do and who you help. And give others a boost too, generosity is powerful.

6. Yes, keep your resume updated. If you’re job searching, apply early, ideally within 24 hours of a posting. Some data suggests that 90% of interviews go to candidates who apply within this initial window. Also, be sure to match your resume headline to the job title. And add at least 5 keywords from the job listing to your professional summary, About section, and/or key skills.

The bottom line:

Start nurturing a career that always belongs to you.

There’s no perfect next step — but movement creates momentum. This is why even small steps count.

Remember: You are the asset.

Protect your energy. Nurture your future. Don’t wait for permission.
