A hallway prank, a business story, and a sharp reminder about career energy.

Hey friend,

My parents, ages 83 and 88, live in a beautiful, multi-level care retirement community. They’re hanging on to independent living by a thin thread and visiting them these days requires a lot of patience—and a good sense of humor.

These days, Mom pushes Dad around in his newly acquired wheelchair. She says she likes being able to control exactly where he goes.

One day, I got a phone call from an upset Care Manager. My parents had just returned from Dad’s physical therapy appointment, where my dad—ever the instigator—convinced my mom to switch places and let him push her down the hallway in his wheelchair. They giggled their way back to their apartment, with Dad wobbling behind the wheelchair. It was an odd reversal of roles as I fielded what felt like a call from the principal’s office. (I assured her they were just having fun; and yes, I realize this isn’t safe, and, of course, I’ll make sure they don’t do it again!)

On this most recent visit, we attended a program where a resident named Ed was the guest speaker. Ed, 87, was the third generation to run his family’s feather business, started in 1901. Yep, feathers!

Ed absolutely lit up as he told stories about the feather trade: the exotic birds, the intricate processing techniques, the elaborate plumes and boas they created, and the glamorous clients they served.

What caught my attention wasn’t just the content—it was the sparkle in Ed’s eyes. His energy, his joy, his engagement. You could tell he loved what he was talking about. He was still captivated by it, decades later.

Moments like that remind me of what meaningful work looks like. When someone is in flow—fully present, lit up by the topic, using skills they’ve refined over time—there’s a kind of aliveness you can’t fake.

And it’s exactly the kind of energy I want you to stay close to in your work.

Because let’s be honest: it’s easy to get pulled off track. The pressure to earn, perform, keep up, and stay relevant—especially in today’s uncertain job market—can dull your instincts. It can push you toward roles or tasks that drain you, simply because they feel more “practical.”

But here's the truth: in a market this tough, it’s hard to compete if you don’t genuinely care about what you’re doing.

Skill alone isn’t enough. You need that internal spark—that sense of connection to the work.

So, how do you find it?

Start by noticing.

  • What moments at work make you feel focused, curious, or just a little more alive?

  • What tasks absorb you?

  • Which topics or problems pull you in instead of pushing you away?

Track those sparks. Write them down.

Then look for patterns.

Once you start to see what lights you up, you can begin to follow the breadcrumbs.

Maybe it’s advocating for a certain kind of client. Or analyzing systems and solving puzzles. Or mentoring others. Maybe it’s working behind the scenes to make something run more smoothly.

The goal isn’t to quit your job tomorrow and chase a dream. The goal is to keep inching toward work that feels more engaging, more energizing, more you.

That spark is your compass. It takes courage to follow it.

It’s trying to point you to your next best step.

Listen to it.

Warmly,

On a Lighter Note:

There’s something about feather stories, hallway hijinks, and retired rebels that puts things in perspective.

It’s easy to get caught up in the serious work of career planning—decisions, strategy, networking, performance. But sometimes, what we need most is a little reminder that joy, mischief, and curiosity are not just allowed... they’re necessary.

Whether it’s laughing your way through a wheelchair joyride or lighting up while talking about exotic bird plumes, there’s a lesson here: presence is powerful.

Even in the busiest season of life or the most uncertain stretch of your career, don’t forget to make space for moments that lift you.

Maybe it’s a walk between meetings. Maybe it’s playing your favorite song while updating your resume. Maybe it’s calling the friend who always reminds you who you are.

Let this be your reminder to stay human in the hustle.

And if you need a laugh? Ask an 88-year-old what mischief they’ve been up to lately. You might be surprised what they teach you.
