Dear {{contact.first_name}}
In the Superman comic books, “kryptonite” is the material that negates superpowers.
You too have superpowers (we talk a lot about superpowers here at the Career Planning Studio), but did you know there’s also kryptonite that you have to watch out for??
Career kryptonite will
Negate your superpowers,
Undermine your job search, and
Render, you defeated before the game even begins.
Career kryptonite is a mindset marked by complaining, self-pity, worry, fear, entitlement, self-doubt, and/or resentment.
It can show up in subtle and sneaky ways.
It can sound like:
I’ve applied to 200 jobs, and nothing’s worked out.
(Subtext: It won’t work for me; see I just proved this whole thing is a disaster)
No one gets back to me.
(Subtext: Why should I bother reaching out? No one will help; I’m stuck)
I don’t like networking, and I suck at it.
(Subtext: I shouldn’t have to talk to people; I shouldn’t have to put myself out there. I shouldn’t have to deal with the reasons I’d prefer to hide.)
Job searching doesn’t work for me.
(Subtext: I shouldn’t have to learn, adjust, or get better at this skill of how to job search in today’s world.)
I’m just a failed ___________. It won’t work for me.
(Subtext: I’m defeated and uniquely a failure)
The job market is horrible. No one is hiring.
(Subtext: The sky is falling, I’m a victim, and I have no power)
Do you recognize yourself in any of these statements? If so, this just makes you human! But allowing these sentiments to linger is a luxury you cannot afford.
If you are serious about designing a career you love, you must recognize career kryptonite when it shows up and banish it from your life.
Of course, it’s difficult.
I know it’s hard.
But complaints conjure nothing but negative energy.
When it comes to a job search, negative energy is repelling the very thing you want. Like grasping for a feather, your very movement is blowing it out of reach.
On the journey to designing your most prosperous career, self-pity, complaining, or resentment are destroyers of your success.
They repel the very thing you are seeking.
“Self-pity slams the door on inspiration,” says author Liz Gilbert. And you need every bit of inspiration to create the life you want.
So, stop complaining.
For the love of all things good, stop complaining and get to work.
Get to work investing in your growth.
Get to work learning how to job search effectively.
Get to work improving how you reach out.
Get to work growing your confidence.
You can do this! It’s hard, AND you can do it.
You will experience ‘failure’. You will hit roadblocks, ghosting, no replies, dead ends, and periods of time where it seems like the world is against you.
This is NORMAL.
DO NOT let this stop you. Persistence is essential. Keep going. You can do this.
Proceed as if success is inevitable.
Stay grounded in your superpowers (this is your calling, after all). Get coaching. Read books. Learn new skills. Try different approaches. Invest in your growth.
Just keep going!
Your work matters. YOU matter. Don’t ever give up.
If you’d like help with this, please reach out! You don’t have to go it alone.
