Hey, {{contact.first_name}}

We lived in Dallas for almost 9 years and, yep, everything really is bigger in Texas. An expression I came to appreciate was, “Big hat, no cattle.”

We instinctively cringe at the image of someone who presents themselves as more important, powerful, or capable than they actually are. It’s someone who’s all show and no substance; someone who might appear impressive on the surface but lacks the skills, knowledge, or resources to back it up.

While I’ve worked with a handful of clients before who needed to come back down to earth, build more skill and capacity, and have a slice of humble pie, my guess is that if you’re reading this newsletter, you are not in that group.

In fact, I literally have the most amazing clients in the world. They are collectively some of the most committed, crazy smart, talented, educated, sincere, impacting-the-world, hearts-of-gold kind of people you will ever meet. You are probably one of them! 😊

The problem?

It’s possible to have LOTS of cattle, but just a little, bitty hat.

The past 2 weeks I’ve been talking about the importance of selling yourself.

When you have tremendous capacity, deep substance, and impressive credentials, but lack comfort with the idea of promoting yourself, it’s extremely difficult to get the seat at the table you deserve.

Having degrees, experience, even knowing your superpowers and having clarity on where you want to go next are ESSENTIAL, but INSUFFICIENT for the task at hand.

The 5th pillar for designing your most prosperous career is learning how to craft a compelling narrative. This is the ‘branding & marketing’ piece of the puzzle.

Learning how to connect the dots of your experience in a way presents yourself as the exact solution the person you’re talking to needs is the skill we’re building.

When you move from Pillars 1 – 4 into Pillar 5, you are moving from a story in which you are the hero, to one in which your targeted audience in the hero.

What matters most to the person you’re talking to? How are you the solution to the recruiter’s problem? The hiring manager’s problem? Start talking about what they care about and position yourself as the solution.

If you’re ready to start working on telling a better story, reach out. This is the work we do in coaching.

Cheering you on,

What I’m reading….

Ready for some practical tips on how to sell yourself better?

Check out Daniel Pink’s book “To Sell is Human: The Surprising Truth About Moving Others.” If you’re short on time like I am, skip straight to Part 3 where you’ll find six successors to the elevator pitch, 3 rules for understanding another’s perspective, and the five frames that can make your message clearer and more persuasive.

Learning to sell yourself in ways that are authentic and winsome are strategic skills you need to master.

You don’t have to do it all at once, and you don’t have to do it in drastic ways, but one small step at a time, we want to grow that beautiful hat of yours!

Why is this important?

Because we need more people like YOU in positions of influence. We need you operating at your highest and best, my friend!

International job boards

If you’re interested in traveling the globe, there are plenty of opportunities out there. Check out some of these international job boards to start researching your next move.

On a Lighter Note:

I’ve gotta say, Texas gave me more than a few things to appreciate—good queso, a healthy respect for tornado sirens, and yes, the perfect career metaphor. If you’re walking around with a whole herd of cattle but a tiny little hat, let’s fix that. Because I promise you: this isn’t about being flashy or fake. It’s about making sure the right people know what you’re bringing to the table—and why they’d be lucky to have you. So go ahead and dust off that metaphorical Stetson.

Let’s make sure your story matches the power of your presence. 🤠

We'd love to hear from you!
