Hey, {{contact.first_name}}
We lived in Dallas for almost 9 years and, yep, everything really is bigger in Texas. An expression I came to appreciate was, “Big hat, no cattle.”
We instinctively cringe at the image of someone who presents themselves as more important, powerful, or capable than they actually are. It’s someone who’s all show and no substance; someone who might appear impressive on the surface but lacks the skills, knowledge, or resources to back it up.
While I’ve worked with a handful of clients before who needed to come back down to earth, build more skill and capacity, and have a slice of humble pie, my guess is that if you’re reading this newsletter, you are not in that group.
In fact, I literally have the most amazing clients in the world. They are collectively some of the most committed, crazy smart, talented, educated, sincere, impacting-the-world, hearts-of-gold kind of people you will ever meet. You are probably one of them! 😊
The problem?
It’s possible to have LOTS of cattle, but just a little, bitty hat.
The past 2 weeks I’ve been talking about the importance of selling yourself.
When you have tremendous capacity, deep substance, and impressive credentials, but lack comfort with the idea of promoting yourself, it’s extremely difficult to get the seat at the table you deserve.
Having degrees, experience, even knowing your superpowers and having clarity on where you want to go next are ESSENTIAL, but INSUFFICIENT for the task at hand.
The 5th pillar for designing your most prosperous career is learning how to craft a compelling narrative. This is the ‘branding & marketing’ piece of the puzzle.
