As we step into the month of February, it is not only a time to celebrate love but also to pay special attention to matters of the heart – both figuratively and literally. While Valentine's Day may be the focal point for many, February is also recognized as Heart Health Month, emphasizing the importance of cardiovascular well-being. As a urogynecologist, I find it pertinent to shed light on the intricate connection between pelvic and heart health.

Heart health extends beyond the cardiovascular system, impacting various aspects of our overall well-being. The interplay between heart health and pelvic health is more significant than one might realize. Let's explore some key insights and practices that contribute to a holistic approach to health.

  1. Exercise for the Heart and Pelvic Floor: Regular physical activity is essential for maintaining a healthy heart. Engaging in cardiovascular exercises, such as brisk walking, swimming, or cycling, not only benefits the heart but also supports pelvic floor health. Strengthening exercises for the pelvic floor muscles, often overlooked, play a crucial role in preventing conditions like pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence.

  2. Nutrition for Heart and Pelvic Health: A heart-healthy diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Similarly, a nutrient-rich diet supports the pelvic organs and tissues. Adequate hydration, coupled with a diet high in fiber, contributes to overall digestive and pelvic health.

  3. Maintaining a Healthy Weight: Obesity is a risk factor for both heart disease and pelvic floor disorders. Maintaining a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise can significantly reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular issues and pelvic health complications.

  4. Stress Management: Chronic stress can negatively impact heart health and contribute to pelvic floor disorders. Practices such as mindfulness, meditation, and yoga can be beneficial for managing stress levels, promoting relaxation, and supporting overall well-being.

  5. Regular Health Check-ups: Routine health check-ups are crucial for monitoring both heart and pelvic health. Regular screenings for cardiovascular risk factors and gynecological examinations can aid in early detection and prevention of potential issues.

  6. Educational Awareness: Knowledge is key to proactive health management. Encouraging open conversations about heart health and pelvic well-being helps break down stigmas and fosters a culture of prevention.

This Heart Health Month, let's commit to embracing a comprehensive approach to health that encompasses both the cardiovascular system and pelvic well-being. By integrating heart-healthy practices into our daily lives, we not only nurture our hearts but also support the intricate balance of our pelvic floor.

Sexual intimacy sets a relationship between two people apart from roommate status. Beyond the pure pleasure of arousal and orgasm, there is an organic, elemental connection between two people who appreciate each other and express it physically. When this aspect of a relationship is lost, a component of the relationship is missing. While this is acceptable to some couples, it is a source of sadness to others.

We frequently hear expressions of this from our patients, and often they are unaware that there are solutions. As we age and our hormone levels drop, sexual function can admittedly become a challenge. The discrepancy between partners happens for a number of reasons. Male sexual desire is sustained well into the ’70s, but women’s desire drops around age 40-50 when the menopause transition occurs.

Some of the barriers to a healthy sexual relationship:

-Vaginal dryness and pain with intercourse (as a result of lack of estrogen makes the idea of vaginal intercourse unappealing to women).

-Decreased sexual desire for women (due to hormone imbalance of estrogen and testosterone, which are essential to desire).

-Surgical removal of ovaries (as a part of the treatment for ovarian cysts, breast cancer, or other reasons which eliminate hormone production).

-Fear of urine loss during intercourse.

We can help solve some of these barriers and get you back to a healthy happy, intimate relationship.

We can use hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Bioidentical hormones are a natural and effective way to restore hormonal balance and enhance overall well-being. Dr. Alinsod's has over 30 year of experience in optimizing hormones. We offer creams and pellets as well as pills and patches. Our cream is ONE cream that has estradiol, estriol, progesterone, testosterone, and DHEA all together. It is simply used before going to bed and as one simple cream to place below your belly button. Dr. Alinsod is currently welcoming new patients for bioidentical hormone therapy, and he provides care for patients across 50 states.

Our patients are encouraged to talk about sexual issues that come up for them. There is no need for embarrassment or shyness. We are here to offer support and guidance, and are more than happy to discuss solutions
