Turning Data into Action: Local Government Elections 2025

We’re excited to share the development of one of its kind dashboards for the Local Government Elections 2025 turnout.

Based on data from 45 cities and districts provided by ElectionNZ, these dashboards make voter participation insights more accessible and actionable.

The suite includes:

  • Top 10 cities/districts turnout across Aotearoa New Zealand

  • Ward-level turnout insights

  • Territorial Authority (TA) daily returns

  • Turnout comparisons between 2022 and 2025

By bringing together turnout data in a clear, interactive format, we help communities, councils, and decision-makers better understand participation trends and foster stronger civic engagement.

This project is a great example of what drives our work at Data n Dashboards: turning complex datasets into dashboards that make decision-making smarter, faster, and more transparent.

Smarter Decisions Start with Better Dashboards

At Data n Dashboards, we believe that data is most valuable when it’s easy to explore, understand, and act upon. That’s why our core offering is dashboard development that transforms complex datasets into clear and interactive insights to aid decision-making.

We build dashboards in Tableau and Power BI, giving organisations the flexibility to work with the platform that best suits their needs. For local councils that often use ERP systems like MAGIQ or TechnologyOne, we ensure seamless integration alongside platforms such as SAP, connecting data across systems so that everything comes together in one comprehensive view.

To help organisations move even faster, we’ve also developed our own DnD Accelerators, pre-built, sector-specific dashboards for health, social, and manufacturing. These accelerators reduce development time while still delivering the depth and quality required for informed decision-making.

Behind Every Dashboard: Design That Drives Impact

Of course, great dashboards aren’t just about connecting data. They must also communicate insights clearly. That’s why design is central to our development process.

Two principles shape every dashboard we deliver: visual hierarchy and colour psychology.

  • Visual hierarchy ensures that key insights stand out at a glance, while supporting details flow naturally.

  • Colour psychology employs trusted cues, such as blue for stability, red for urgency, and green for growth, to guide interpretation and reinforce meaning.

Together, they transform raw numbers into dashboards that engage, inform, and inspire action.

From Principles to Practice: The Waikato Housing Initiative

These principles come to life in our work with the Waikato Housing Initiative (WHI), a cross-sector collaboration led by the Waikato Wellbeing Project.

WHI’s vision is that the residents are well-housed, but their challenge was clear: housing data was scattered across agencies, which made it inconsistent and difficult to use.

Partnering with WHI, we developed 18 interactive dashboards that bring together insights on affordability, supply, wellbeing, and cultural needs. Today, these dashboards are helping:

  • councils target investments and track housing supply,

  • health agencies link housing conditions to hospitalisations,

  • Iwi and community groups advocate for culturally responsive housing, and

  • policy leaders plan strategically with a system-wide view.

Instead of siloed reports, WHI now has a live, region-wide evidence base that enables collaboration, transparency, and measurable impact.

Let’s keep building dashboards that not only display data but tell stories, build trust, and drive action.

Until next time.

With love,

The DnD Team ❤️
