How Come You Don't Know What I Didn't Tell You?

“Assumptions are the termites of relationships”

– Henry Winkler

When was the last time you asked yourself or someone else the above question, outloud, silently, or considered that question at all?

Maybe never.

You slipped into a stream of assumptions, that the listener or reader MUST already know what you know, aspects that are obvious or “common sense.”

In fact, you never shared the connectors while teaching what you’re introducing in a professional or social environment.

As a subject matter expert, you’re way ahead of many coming to your knowledge through your publications or spoken presentations. Your scope of expertise starts best with basic level how-to tips before going deeper or wider into your topic. You best serve your audiences by progressing bits and pieces at a time, making learning easier, compelling, and more interesting.

You can monetize different formats in different business models. Single copies sold one at a time online or as  “back of the room sales” at a speaking engagement or in bookstores are traditional ways. Another sales model is selling wholesale in large quantities to companies and associations, where the decision maker uses your products as marketing tools and new revenue streams.

Wait – What? Huh? What marketing tools and new revenue streams? What’s THAT about? How does that happen? Why would someone do that anyway? All those unknowns. Sounds complicated.

You discovered alternate paths to monetize your expertise. These products and the non-traditional revenue streams and marketing tools have their greatest value to your company and the organizations who want to stand out positively in a sea of sameness. Those same decision makers recognize tips products as an ideal way to educate their consumers, build trust and relationships, and keep them coming back for more. Those same decision makers recognize effective, lucrative ways to uniquely use your products over time, and sincerely care what their customers and clients need and want. Regardless of AI’s great value, YOU are the expert. People want human interaction.

As the content creator you are, something about this sounds enticing in breaking the “we’ve always done it this way”approach. Once you have your products selling in bulk as a primary sales model you’ll experience what exciting and lucrative ways it is to scale your business without necessarily your expenses or calendar. The idea is alive and well, you’re intrigued by the concept, yet you’re at a loss about your next steps.

A glimmer enters your thoughts. Hmm, maybe a tips booklet you create could be a free gift when someone purchases something from a company. How does that work? It’s obvious to you, yet not to the person yet to travel that path. Showing a professionally designed PDF sample of your booklet to someone high up in a company's marketing department is ideal to contact, whether knowing them or not, regardless of how much you feel like a fish out of water. That decision maker has a job to do; you’re there to help them do their job better. That person creates promotional campaigns highlighting new products or new versions of an existing product. They include a printed copy or PDF version of your booklet as a bonus when you buy that product, a gift with that purchase.

When approaching a decision maker to introduce your booklet, audio, calendar, card deck, or any other information product to buy in quantity, it’s possible you’ll only get as far as “Oh, what a lovely product; Congratulations” unless you tell them 3 or 4 ways to use that product to their advantage. Unless you connect the dots with clear, specific, simple, concise suggestions on ways to use your product to their advantage both you and they miss the mark. The best question to ask yourself at that point to make this the last time you experience this is: How Come You Don't Know What I Didn't Tell You?
