“Selling is really about having conversations with people and helping improve their company or their life.”

FUN????

Did you take a double-take reading that subject line? Is it hard or impossible to imagine anything fun about that? You are not alone.

You and millions or even billions of people have pre-set negative feelings and opinions about that activity. Maybe it’s pure curiosity prompting you to see what this article says, possibly shining a light on something you missed, or have yet to learn or consider.

ANXIETY

Maybe your idea of definition equates to asking people for a favor, or you’ve watched or heard someone do an aggressive, in-your-face sales pitch, stopping only when someone buys or walks away.

Not only are those ineffective approaches, they push people away rather than engage them, and are fun for no one.

TRUTH

How about this? What you’re really doing is helping.

Yup, that’s right. You have a product or service you created with the intention of helping people improve their life in some way. How do you feel when you’ve helped someone? Do you feel happy, joyful, or really great?  Imagine your product or service helps someone. They feel wonderful, and so do you! Who couldn’t stand a bit more happiness and fun in their life?

GRATITUDE

In fact, they feel so wonderful, they want to express their gratitude. That gratitude is shown in the money given to you, to thank you for solving a problem they had. In many cases that money is given without a moment’s hesitation. You fixed a problem they had. They may not have known they had a problem, much less how to fix it.

Before you go into the self-defeating reasons why this approach is simplistic, would never work, or doesn’t apply to you because you believe you have no contacts, stop yourself. Instead, have a conversation with someone you feel your product or service could improve their life. Think about what problem or challenge you’re aware of that would be improved by having your product or service.

TEST

Invite that person to have a coffee date with you.  Let them know you want to test out an idea that could be helpful to them, that their opinion would be helpful to you. All of that is true.

Did you see the word “selling” anywhere??? (other than in the title of this article.)  Nope, it’s not there. You’re sincerely looking to help the person. There are people who are ready, interested, and eager to have you solve their challenge, and people who are not. It’s also a very big, abundant world. None of us can reach everyone who would be our client.

OUTLOOK

What you’ve read here boils down to one thing - mindset. When you are authentically seeking to help someone, there is no convincing, no pressuring, no desire for anyone to escape from the conversation.  They either agree with the help you are offering or they don’t. They may not see the problem that you see. Or they may completely agree with what you’ve shared, and it’s a matter of the timing being off at that moment.
