Where Tips Can Improve Your Life

Some Love to Speak,

Some Not So Much

"Picture yourself in a living room having a chat with your friends. You would be relaxed and comfortable talking to them;  the same applies when public speaking."

-Sir Richard Branson

You see that title and have a pretty clear idea of which describes you today, right?

Maybe you did not always feel how you do today about speaking, and that’s understandable. Things happen. Feelings and circumstances change. You might also have caveats. Certain situations are easier for you to speak than others.

Or maybe speaking is your go-to. An audience - ANY audience - is the best, easiest, most enjoyable, and most welcome environment for you to communicate. You get energized when you have people eager and ready to listen to you and your wisdom wrapped in your unique presentation style.

Then there is the category that includes some of each, depending on how you feel on a particular day at a particular time of day or night, who the audience is, how large or small it is, how attentive they are, what the venue is, are you speaking live or being video or audio recorded or both, how passionate you are about your content, and dozens of other variables, any of which can pump you up, drag you down, or somewhere in between.

Wondering what any of this has to do with how-to tips? So glad you asked!!

Here’s the really great news. Remember those tips that reflect your expertise, the ones you collected for your presentation?  Well, they are your anchors, to expand, contract, or both, again, depending on those variables.

Let’s say you are invited to be a guest on a podcast, a radio show, or as a panel member, and your speaking time is somewhere between 5 minutes (yup!) and 30 minutes. It’s amazing how fast that time can go. Sharing ONE of your tips, mentioning it’s a great starting point into your area of expertise. Going into a little bit of depth about how that tip can be applied in the listeners’/viewers’ everyday life brings it to life. A 15-30 minute time slot allows taking several more tips and expanding each with a few sentences.

Like so many other things in life, starting small is like dipping your toes into cold water. It often gets warmer fairly quickly. The same is true with briefly speaking about your expertise. There is no need to jump into the deep end of the pool when starting a speaking journey. Little by little is not only easier to feel your way, you might be happily surprised to discover the worry was worse than the work.

On the other end of the speaking scenario, you’ve been happily delivering keynote speeches, multi day training workshops, and educational sessions at summits and conferences. You’re a seasoned professional who makes your living through your speaking skills. You have no qualms or hesitation about speaking.

What you are finding, though, is when you have those promotional opportunities as a podcast guest, or a 15 minute spot on a radio or television interview that is primarily an educational marketing context, or you are one of five panel members, you discover how challenging it can be to succinctly share your brilliance in a meaningful way. After all, interacting with the audience is your oxygen. You want to breathe easily rather than be gasping for air as you squeeze tons of value into a few short minutes.

In either case, there are more speaking opportunities now than ever before. In fact there are so many, it’s almost if not completely impossible to do all the media research, make contact, send promotional material to the event producer, schedule and maybe reschedule the interview, plan your content, and deliver it. Whew. Yes, all of that can be involved, unless you’re speaking to 10 people you invited to your conference room or living room for a small discussion on what you want to share.

Because podcasts (and summits) have become so popular in recent years, many professionals have established all manner of related services to make things easier for you to basically show up and talk.

In fact, there are now so many podcasts on so many topics, it’s one of the most cost and time effective ways to share your knowledge with the world. No travel fees, only dress professionally from the waist up, appear regardless of the weather, reach many more people than ever, and post the recording of the interview online to reach more people than you ever thought possible. While you’d ideally like your podcast interviewer to have a large following, it almost doesn’t matter since there are so many places to upload the recording.

The kinds of remarkable outcomes from being a podcast guest can be amazing. Someone driving along in their car, listening to a podcast interview can hear you speaking  and determine you may well be the ideal person for any one of a number of projects or positions in their company, community organization, or professional association. Things like that happen more than you may realize.

Whether your challenge is getting beyond your hesitancy about speaking, or you’re wondering how to bring just enough to powerfully impact a listener or viewer in less time, consider taking inventory of what you can offload to an expert who is eager and able to help. The world needs what you know and who you are, and they need that now.

Rather than going on a wild goose hunt to find the right expert for everything related to podcast guesting, we have a Trusted Resource that does as little or much of the tasks as you want. That’s everything from securing your placements to teaching you to be an outstanding podcast guest.  His company is reasonably priced, offering both service bundles and ala carte, and are a dream to work with.
