BEHIND THE SCENES
Some tools now that never existed before – tiny computer varieties on phones and watches, technology to speed the writing process, conference call resources for the population at large, to name a few. Cars that had no radiator and beetles that not only grew bigger, they added travel technology and a retracting roof to be a convertible.
Maybe you’re a retired educator and you want to get your foot back into teaching. You might need to be a student now before safely getting onto that moving train.
Or, you can take your outstanding teacher skills to students who need to start at very basic content levels. Maybe English is not their native language, and you only speak English. You have the opportunity to teach them a new language and new subject content, at a basic level. You may trip over your tongue initially, wondering how you could have been such a good teacher earlier in your life, yet floundering now. (I'll write about THAT personal experience sometime!)
OLD AND NEW SIMULTANEOUSLY
Your experience is now new and old at the same time. You haven’t taught in awhile, you dealt with native English speakers back then and not now. By going to the most basic level, you and your students both learn what works and what doesn’t. You are also opening the door to experiences and tools that never existed.
When computers first appeared for retail purchase and well beyond, many people resisted learning to use them, myself included.Numerous patient friends introduced me to the new magic machine. Others resisted for years, until one friend discovered she could not easily buy a plane ticket over the phone anymore, only by computer. She had to join the modern era if she wanted to travel by commercial airline.
SO WHAT'S THE POINT?
Where's all this reminiscing and observing going? It leads to opportunities to use the knowledge you do have and share with people who want or need to learn from you .
Years ago, a colleague once shared a thought that puts this into a simple perspective: “To the 3rd grader, a 4th grader is a god.” The 4th grader may only be a little further along in what they know. However, they likely know more than the 3rd grader does.
NOW IS WHERE YOU ARE
Wherever you are as a Subject Matter Expert, you know more on your topic than many others do. Your knowledge is valuable and current, to a point. Metaphorically, you can teach basic and maybe intermediate, or even advanced levels of your topic, starting a student at the beginning of their journey with your area of expertise. In essence, you can be at the nursery school, kindergarten, or elementary school levels in starting your students on their learning journey.
At a certain point, you very likely expanded your knowledge and can take your students further or you can hand them off to another Subject Matter Expert to guide them through the more advanced, more current information.
As that famous author, Emily Dickinson said, forever is composed of nows. It's living every moment to the fullest, being as present as you possibly can be, and realizing it's the only place you can truly be a catalyst for transformation. There will always be new "nows." Living largely in the past or future means you'll miss life and the lives of those you can enhance with what you know right now.
