More recently Sophie began writing Crime Fiction/Mystery as Evie Hawtrey. Even her mystery (And by Fire) has history in it, featuring the 1666 Great Fire alongside a modern, London-set, storyline. Sophie splits her time between Washington DC, and York, UK (as a recipient of the UK Talent Visa in Literature).

Ø DAY OF FIRE: A NOVEL OF POMPEII written as Sophie Perinot with Kate Quinn, Ben Kane, Eliza Knight, Stephanie Dray and Vicky Alvear [William Morrow / 2023/ ISBN-13: ‎978-0063310568]

Pompeii was a lively resort flourishing in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius at the height of the Roman Empire. When Vesuvius erupted in an explosion of flame and ash, the entire town would be destroyed. Six authors bring to life overlapping stories of patricians and slaves, warriors and politicians, villains and heroes who cross each others' path during Pompeii's fiery end. But who will escape the mountain’s wrath, and who will be buried for eternity?

Ø AND BY FIRE written as Evie Hawtrey (genre dual timeline mystery) [Crooked Lane / 2022 / ISBN-13: ‎978-1643859934]

Tempered by fire and separated by centuries, two extraordinary female detectives track a pair of murderous geniuses willing to burn the world for their art in this twisty mystery. When a charred figure is found curled beside the Monument to the Great Fire of London, DI Nigella is dragged into a case pitting her against a murderous artist creating sculptures using burnt flesh. As she races to collect clues, the long-dead architect, Sir Christopher Wren, keeps turning up. Digging into Wren’s legacy leads Nigella into the coldest of cold cases: a search for a bookseller gone missing during the 1666 Great Fire of London. More than 350 years earlier, while looking for a friend, a second female detective—a lady-in-waiting to the Queen—discovered foul play in the supposedly accidental destruction of St. Paul’s Cathedral…but did that same devilry lead to murder? And can these centuries-old crimes help Nigella catch a modern-day murderer?

Ø RIBBONS OF SCARLET: A NOVEL OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION’S WOMEN written as Sophie Perinot with Kate Quinn, Stephanie Dray, Eliza Knight, Heather Webb and Laura Kamoie [William Morrow / 2019 / ISBN-13: ‎978-0062916075]

RIBBONS is a breathtaking, epic novel illuminating the hopes, desires, and destinies of princesses and peasants, harlots and wives, fanatics and philosophers—unforgettable women who left their distinctive marks on one of the most tumultuous and transformative events in history.

Ø MÉDICIS DAUGHTER: A NOVEL OF MARGUERITE DE VALOIS written as Sophie Perinot [St. Martin’s / 2015 / ISBN-13: ‏978-1250072092 in hardcover. Usignolo Press / 2019 / ISBN-13: ‎978-1733389907 in paperback}

Beautiful young Princess Margot is summoned to the 16th century French Court, where nothing is what it seems, and a wrong word can lead to ruin. Known across Europe as Madame la Serpente, Margot's intimidating mother, Queen Catherine de Médicis, is a powerful force in a country devastated by religious war. Among the crafty nobility of the royal court, Margot learns the unspoken rules she must live by to please her poisonous family. Though Margot's heart belongs to the charismatic Duc de Guise, her hand will be offered to Henri of Navarre, a Huguenot leader and a notorious heretic looking to seal a tenuous truce. But the promised peace is a mirage. When Margot's wedding devolves into the bloodshed of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, she will be forced to choose between her family and her soul.

Ø THE SISTER QUEENS written as Sophie Perinot [Berkley / 2012 / ISBN-13 : 978-1101577288]

Raised at the 13th century court of their father, the Count of Provence, Marguerite and Eleanor are separated by these royal marriages--but never truly parted. Marguerite is the more patient and perfect of the pair . . . used to being first. She wants to be a good wife and a good Queen, but her husband Louis IX of France is a religious zealot who denies himself the love and companionship his wife craves. Eleanor, on the other hand, is strong-willed and stubborn. When she becomes Queen of England, she quickly discovers that Henry III is a good man, but ill-suited to being a king.

Can Marguerite borrow enough of her sister's boldness to grasp her chance for happiness in a forbidden love? And can Eleanor stop competing with her sister and value what she has, or will she let it slip away? When sisters are involved all things are possible.

A Noble Cunning: The Countess and the Tower
By Patricia Bernstein

Patricia Bernstein’s A Noble Cunning: The Countess and the Tower is a captivating work of historical fiction that brings to life a remarkable true story from early 18th-century Britain. Set against the backdrop of the Jacobite uprising of 1715, the novel follows Bethan Glentaggart, a fictionalized version of the real Winifred Maxwell, Countess of Nithsdale. When Bethan’s husband is captured and imprisoned in the Tower of London, facing execution for treason, she refuses to accept his fate and embarks on a daring plan to free him.

What makes the novel compelling is Bernstein’s ability to balance historical accuracy with narrative drive. She recreates the peril and intrigue of the time period without ever losing sight of the deeply human story at the center: a woman’s devotion to her husband and her refusal to be powerless in the face of overwhelming odds. The dramatic escape from the Tower forms the emotional high point of the novel, but the surrounding details of aristocratic life, political turmoil, and religious tension enrich the story and anchor it firmly in its historical setting.

The novel also highlights themes that feel surprisingly modern, particularly the role of women in shaping history. Bethan is portrayed not as a passive bystander but as a resourceful and courageous heroine whose ingenuity and determination defy expectations of her gender and class. Bernstein also explores questions of loyalty, love, faith, and identity, showing how personal relationships and private convictions intersect with larger historical events

A Noble Cunning is both an engrossing page-turner and a thoughtful tribute to a woman whose bravery might otherwise have been forgotten. Bernstein’s elegant prose and vivid storytelling make the novel accessible to general readers while offering rich detail for lovers of history. It is a tale of love and loyalty, of courage and conviction, and a reminder that sometimes the boldest acts of resistance come not from soldiers or kings, but from women willing to risk everything for those they love.
