The Historic Traveler Newsletter!
July 15, 2025

To Our Readers:

In case you missed our social media posts, The Historic Traveler had the privilege of being the primary sponsor for the Historic Novel Society of North America 2025 Conference. I had the great pleasure of meeting some of the top historic novelists in the world today. You will likely recognize many of the names! Fiona Davis, Kate Quinn, Margaret George, Sarah Penner, Laura Morelli, Madeline Martin, Stephanie Cowell, Sophie Perinot, Zenobia Neil, Vanessa Riley, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Heather Webb, Susan Meissner, Jeffrey Blount and AM (Alison) Stuart, among many others. And stay tuned…several said they will sit for The Historic Traveler Magazine author interview!

The panels were stellar, helping writers improve their storytelling or their publishing prospects. There were a number of “cozy chats” where authors just held court on a subject they knew well and invited conversation with the small room filled with avid enthusiasts and fans. We had great keynotes from Fiona Davis and Silvia Moreno-Garcia. The two days were topped off by a fun costume contest where authors wore something that evoked their book era or characters.

We made a ton of new friends and look forward to bringing many of them into our Historic Traveler Family!

Here are a few photos from the event:

Outlander Returns with a Prequel

If you are as much of a fan as I am, the end of the Outlander saga on Starz is a very sad occurrence indeed—saying goodbye to these incredible characters that stole our hearts from the beginning! But take heart Sassenachs! Starz is beginning the new prequel on Aug. 8 bringing you the love story and struggles of Jaime and Claire’s parents in Outlander: Blood of My Blood.

The Old North Church in Boston Rediscovers Angel Paintings from 1730!

Although historic researchers and conservators knew there was a copy of a contract signed by early American congregation member and artist John Gibbs for his commission to paint a series of angels high up on the church wall, those angels were nowhere to be seen. This historic church, on the eve of its 250th anniversary, is best known as the location where Paul Revere alerted his fellow American Revolutionaries of the coming of the British --“One if by land and two if by sea.”

But it seems that in 1912, those historic images were whitewashed with massive coats of paint. And now, thanks to a yearlong effort by conservators, those angels are once again flying high. Says Emily Spence, associate director of education at Old North Illuminated which operates the church as an historic site: “For much of the church’s history, people who were coming here…would have seen those angels and seen the colorful interior of the church.” And how they will again!

Agent 355
By Marie Benedict

Known to history only by her alias, this mysterious female spy, Agent 355 was able to move freely and unobtrusively in Loyalist circles, becoming a member of George Washington’s New York–based Culper Ring. This thrilling novella depicts who Marie Benedict thinks Agent 355 could have been, though her true identity still remains unknown.

During the sweltering summer of 1779, eighteen-year-old Elizabeth Morris attends the social events of the British-occupied city, but the forced merriment holds no charm for her. She finds herself in the company of enemy soldiers, who think nothing of discussing matters of government and war in front of mere women. This invisibility becomes Elizabeth’s greatest asset as she offers her services to Robert Townsend, a Continental sympathizer. Her bravery will bring down one of the most notorious traitors in American history and ultimately seal her fate as a woman willing to sacrifice everything for love and country. Before that fate finds her, she finds love.

This is a quick read that sheds light on one of the most remarkable women who changed the course of history, ensuring an American victory and the creation of the United States of America.
