A WARRIOR HAS FALLEN...

The Army and Navy Academy lost a member of its Long Grey Line.

Senator David Kelly was a member of the class of 1947. He served on the Board of Trustees - elected in 2009, was the Secretary of the Board for a term, and recently served as an Emeritus Trustee.

After graduating from the Academy, he studied citrus production at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, California. During the Korean Conflict and post, he served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force, piloting C-82 and C-119 transport planes during the Berlin Airlift and postwar reconstruction, while stationed at Rhein-Main Air Force Base in Germany. For over 40 years, Senator Kelly was a dedicated citrus rancher in Hemet and an influential voice in agricultural policy. He served as President of the Riverside County Farm Bureau and on the Hemet–San Jacinto Basin Resource Conservation District board and was a driving force behind the development of the Western Science Center at UC Riverside. Senator Kelly served the state of California for over two decades, championing water conservation, environmental protection, and sustainable agriculture, from 1979 to 1992 and from 2000 to 2001.

The above accomplishments represent a lifetime of Virtue. Senator Kelly was an example of the fulfillment of our Academy’s mission: “We forge virtuous young men for life.” He was a man of Honor, Integrity, Respect, Commitment, Gratitude, and Courage. Fellow Trustees and members of the community who have known and worked with the Senator will agree with the above.

On a personal note, Senator Kelly once paraphrased a stanza from Rudyard Kipling’s “IF” when we were discussing an issue a couple of years ago; it stayed with me as he exemplified it:

“If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you.

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too:”

Senator Kelly “passed away peacefully in his sleep” Wednesday, Sept. 24, and is survived by four children, nine grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family requests privacy currently. Information about the memorial service will be announced at a future date.

Jeffrey Tisor, 85

Chairman of the Board of Trustees

Our Back to School Fundraising Challenge was a huge success!  Together we raised $61,000, which was well over our goal!  Thank you so much to everyone who participated!  All money raised will go directly towards enhancing your sons' education and experience at Army and Navy Academy!

And now the winners.........

Congratulations go out to:

Flight Company for the Highest Participation percentage at 92%

and to Alpha Company, which raised the Highest Dollars at over $18,000

Both Flight and Alpha will be rewarded with their own Pizza and Ice Cream parties!

And, since we crushed the goal of 50K, the whole Corps of Cadets will be rewarded with a "Wear Anything You Want & Skip Morning PT Day"

Congratulations to the entire Corps of Cadets!

GRADES FOR PHYSICAL TRAINING COURSE

A cadet's grade for the Physical Training class is based solely on participation. He receives 10 points for each day he attends, zero points when he is absent, and 5 points when he is tardy.  This is a very easy course to earn an "A" in, provided the cadet is present and on time each Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday for PT.

INTERESTED IN ATTENDING A SERVICE ACADEMY

In addition to the wonderful presentation "The Road Less Traveled" presented by LTC Scarborough, if you would like to get some one-on-one support understanding the Academy admissions requirements, patrons and cadets are welcome to set up an appointment with Dr. Ryan.

Please reach out via email at mryan@armyandnavyacademy.org to schedule a meeting.

CANDIDATE FITNESS ASSESSMENT

The Service Academies require a unique fitness assessment. Our wonderful JROTC staff is conducting preparation sessions to help cadets of ANY grade level who might be interested in attending a Service Academy prepare for these rigorous assessments. These sessions will be held during regular morning PT periods, so please reach out to your JROTC instructor for details about how to participate.

GRADING PERIOD AWARDS

We will be combining Grading Period One (GP1) awards with the Wednesday Chapel Talks over the next several weeks and making the video of these awards available to patrons and cadets through the normal Wednesday Chapel Talk videos. We will also be publishing in the Weekly Warrior a listing of the cadets who earn academic honors at the awards presentations.

TUTORIAL

Monday's Advisory is now being modified to specifically help cadets receive an hour of Tutorial, as has been done in the past (last year, it was two 30-minute sessions). Cadets will check in with their Advisory teacher and be sure their Study Hall Battle Plan is complete. During the academic day, each Monday, each teacher will help cadets complete that course's components of their Study Hall Battle Plan during their 40-minute class period. This will hopefully allow cadets to have a quick check-in with their Advisory teacher and then go see any teacher from whom they need tutorial services.

STUDY HALL

Each week on Sunday night, study hall rosters are published and sent to all teachers and TACs. Cadets are assigned to mandatory Study Hall if they have missing assignments or any D or F grades. The first week of the new grading period, since all cadets have "started over" with a fresh grade in each course, and missing assignments from GP1 are no longer accepted, no one is assigned to mandatory Study Hall.

But this coming Sunday, cadets with any missing assignments or D or F grades from GP2 will be assigned to mandatory Study Hall on Monday through Thursday evenings from 7:15-8:45 PM in their company's Study Hall classrooms. So far this year, we have had only a handful of cadets who have failed to complete their missing assignments during the weekly mandatory Study Hall times, so only those handful have been assigned to MASH on Fridays and/or Saturdays. This is indeed wonderful news and a testament to the hard work of our cadets, teachers, and TACs.

ATHLETIC UPDATE

What a weekend! Our Warrior Cross Country team had a great two-day showing at different events. This past Friday, they ran at the renowned Downey Classic and showcased a lot of hard work leading to all-new times for our cadets. Carrying that over into Saturday, they ran at the Grit and Grind at Cal State San Marcos and again showcased themselves against some of the top runners and improved their times. Big Kudos to runners and coaches on pushing through the heat and competition.

Making a splash, our Warriors competed in the East County Invitational over the weekend at West Hills and Monta Vista High Schools, competing against some of the top Division 2 and 3 teams. Our Warriors competed well and won a few matches, led by Oliver Bayne and Quinn Zurawaski, amongst others.

After a nice break, our Warrior Football teams will be competing this afternoon, October 2, against Santa Fe Christian, and on Saturday, October 4, as well, for a college football atmosphere noon game down at Santa Fe Christian.

The Warrior Raider team kicks off their season this Saturday, October 4, out in the Inland Empire, led by our BC Vincent Sze, CSM Nicolas Chestnut, and a host of key leaders. Our Warriors look to showcase their hard work.

Please make note, we've had a schedule change to the final home football game against Classical Academy, which has been changed to October 30. JV will play at 4:00 pm and Varsity at 7:00 pm.
