Spending and saving...
I like to include little personal details about financial stuff because I don't know about you, but I never had ANYONE around that taught me about finances. So having a glimpse into someone else's financial life is always helpful for me.
We earned a gazillion credit card points in August because we spent $10,000+ more than usual.
BIG yikes when I see all of that written out, but I now have enough points for two free round trip flights to Hawaii (or most other places in the US) so I guess it's not all bad.
Plus, I bought a house (yes, I have a mortgage now), car (saving tons of $$ by getting rid of our gas hog of a van), and a TON of supplies for Spellbound Brewz.
We planned this out and had money in the bank as a cushion, but still need to work hard to:
rebuild our emergency savings (goal is 12 months worth of expenses but 6 months is more realistic right now)
get aggressive with investing again (at $1K/mo right now but want to get up to $5K/mo)
and pay off our house as quickly as we can.
Did you know that on our $2100 mortgage payment with a 6.5% interest rate, only $275 of that payment each month is going to the actual mortgage?
The rest are taxes, insurance, and fees. SHEESH.
We are making extra $275 payments (specifying to PRINCIPAL ONLY) as often as we can, because I'm not about to pay a million dollars for this lil' house we just bought lol.
