Happy New Year!
What do I have control over? This year feels both exciting and uncertain. Our country is on the brink of significant change, and I can’t help but think about how this shift will impact me, my work, my family and my community. In response, I’ve decided to focus on what I can control—nurturing my relationships, engaging with those around me, contributing through the work I do and being a good friend and neighbor.
As I start 2025, I find myself reflecting on the meaning of the relationships I’ve cultivated specifically in my neighborhood. Over 10 years ago, I moved into my house in SE Portland as a single mother and immediately began building meaningful connections with my neighbors. Of course I learned my 70 year old neighbor was an adoptive father who was estranged from his two adult children. Over the years we have taken turns supporting each other. I would mow his lawn in exchange for fresh farm eggs! About 6 years ago I had my back yard shed broken into and all my camping gear stolen. That same neighbor bought me the strongest most durable lock one could find. When handing me my new lock he said to me “I am sorry Kid that happened to you” and with those words I just melted into a pile of tears. Two days ago my friend and neighbor died and I miss him already.
I am holding space for what’s ahead while anchoring myself in gratitude for the small corner of the world I call home. I’m thankful to have a place where I have cultivated trust and community—one I know I can lean on for years to come. It is a reminder that even amidst uncertainty, connection can be our greatest strength. I am bringing the same intention and focus I have put into nurturing relationships and cultivating community to the work I do at Adoption Mosaic. I hope you will engage and participate with us throughout 2025.
