July 2024

As we embrace the height of summer, I find myself in a season of both excitement and heartfelt farewells. It is with mixed emotions that I announce Cal’s next big adventure. Cal has been an incredible Operations Assistant at Adoption Mosaic for over two years. However, our journey together started much earlier—back in 2006! Cal attended a youth activity group I facilitated, and who could have imagined that nearly two decades later, we would not only become friends, but also work together. Cal’s unwavering support and dedication have been integral to Adoption Mosaic’s growth and success. A BIG THANK YOU, Cal! I can't wait to see where your next chapter takes you.

Reflecting on June, I had the privilege to visit Chicago and attend my fourth KAAN conference.  It was a truly enriching experience, filled with meaningful connections and profound learning. Meeting people in person that I have only seen on Zoom, reconnecting with long-time acquaintances, and sharing space with fellow adoptees were just a few highlights. I was honored to present alongside two incredible co-facilitators, Liz Kwon and Maureen McCauley, on challenging yet vital topics: “Can Adoptive Parents Be Critical Thinkers about Adoption?” and “Estrangement in Adoption: Preventing, Accepting, and Healing.” A heartfelt thank you to the @wearekaan team for orchestrating such an outstanding conference. I am already looking forward to KAAN 2025 in Atlanta!

This summer, Adoption Mosaic is fully immersed in a whirlwind of activities. From attending and presenting at conferences like KAAN and BIPOC Voices to testifying on behalf of children in the child welfare system in Washington State. We are also looking forward to engaging with adoptive families at camps hosted by Holt and Pact and delivering comprehensive transracial adoption workshops in Chicago at the end of this month! Registration links for: adoption professionals and adoptive families. Are you an adoptee in the Chicago area? Keep an eye out for details about an Adoption Mosaic gathering on Friday, July 19th.

Adding to the excitement, I am thrilled to announce we are days away from launching our merch store featuring hats, T-shirts, water bottles, and much more. Stay tuned. Guess who played a pivotal role in bringing this merchandise to life? Yes, it was Cal! Their creative input and hard work have been instrumental in this new venture. Thank you, Cal!

Wishing you all a joyful and sun-filled July.

It has been a privilege to learn from, work at, and contribute to the growth of Adoption Mosaic over the last almost two and a half years. In this time I have had the gift of mentorship, friendship, community, and conversation from many of you involved with Adoption Mosaic, whether you were my Adoption Mosaic colleagues, on a panel, attended an adoptee social, or otherwise engaged with our programs and services. Thank you all!

While I won't be on the operations team anymore, I will still be in the greater Adoption Mosaic community! You may see me at an adoptee social, at a We the Experts event, or at Astrid's house:)

I'm returning to school this fall and am excited for the adventures that await. And I will be hard at work on Marcescence Magazine, a publication that aims to trace the movement of power in the adoption, foster care, and child welfare industries. Our first issue is slated for release spring 2025!

See you around:)

Adoptees United: Citizenship Clinic Launch

We are excited to announce the launch of our Citizenship Clinic, a pro bono legal service for intercountry adoptees. The legal clinic's initial priority is serving intercountry adoptees who may have US citizenship issues or questions.

Within that broad priority, the initial focus of legal work will be:

  • legal screenings, including obtaining USCIS (immigration) records to determine a client's immigration and/or citizenship status;

  • general advice, including what next steps may be and what options are available;

  • if needed, legal representation to secure a Certificate of Citizenship (filing an N-600);

  • referrals, if available, for intercountry adoptees who must naturalize to become a US citizen.

You Can Yoga Virtual Class: For BIPOC Adoptees
