I YAM WHAT I YAM...

I love cartoons. The pure escapism of being drawn...living in a world where a duck gets a shotgun blast to the face and all that happens is his duck bill spins around his head...isn't this the dream??? I feel like we've had enough pate in this universe to last a lifetime. So this week, let's celebrate the alternate universes where creatures act like people thanks to pen and ink, and you can defy gravity, common sense and still get your Acme order in less than 20 seconds.

Also, Monster Zero seems so much better than spinach ever will...

Here is some stuff I like and hope you like too...

AS ALWAYS, REPLY TO THIS EMAIL WITH YOUR THOUGHTS AND COMMENTS AND STUFF YOU WANT TO SEE! I FEEDBACK IS ALWAYS APPRECIATED!

ME AND ANIME

I try to watch anime. I love the premise of me as an attractive Asian superhero fighting in space and hanging out with adorable PokΓ©mon-type creatures. In my dreams, people have to collect trading cards of me and then not open them, eventually selling my likeness next to a Topps 1989 card of Pete Rose being banned from baseball. I feel like there is a real opportunity to generate cash for us all. It's like crypto (I think--I still don't even know what that really is) except it is for nerds...so exactly like crypto! πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€

YOU'VE BEEN COUSIN OLIVERED

Most of us know about Jump the Shark at this point. It is the moment when your favorite TV show goes one step over the line and cannot recover. It stems from the classic Happy Days moment where Fonzie literally jumps a shark on waterskis in his leather jacket. One of the greatest moments ever on TV. There is a second trend that has infiltrated the TV world...the Cousin Oliver Syndrome. This happens when a series is getting long in the tooth and dipping in the ratings, so they add an adorable yet grating child to the mix. While all of the following examples are not pure Cousin Olivers, they are characters that almost ruined great shows...

Scrappy Doo

I never thought I would miss the comic hijinks of Scooby Dum, but Scrappy Doo made me rue those words. He is the most obvious place to start. Scrappy Doo was your drunk frat friend in a bar in college who kept mouthing off about how tough they were, only to get you into an unwanted scrap. Puppy Power was little more than shadow boxing, with less ferocity than water aerobics at the senior center. Scrappy Doo will eventually get you killed in an unnecessary gang turf war for literally no reason at all. Bring back the Globetrotters, and take back Scrappy.

Godzooky

Who thought that a lizard morphed by nuclear radiation and who constantly wreaks havoc on Tokyo, causing trillions of dollars in untold damage, almost killing Raymond Burr in the 1956 classic, would need a comic relief sidekick in the form of an incompetent junior monster??? One of the oddest twists in the Godzilla lore. You know what no genetically mutated creature of destruction ever needed? Jokes. They were already killing! πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€ Couldn't resist!!!

Yukon Cornelius

If only the Bumble had landed on Yukon Cornelius when they tumbled over the cliff's edge instead of the other way around. Arguably the most obnoxious character in the entire Rankin-Bass universe of delightful claymations, I would even take another big eared Baby New Year over Yukon Cornelius. Where is Heatmiser when you need him???

Captain Caveman

This is gonna be borderline woke, so fair warning-- is Captain Caveman the most overtly sexist cartoon ever to have been on TV??? A literal Neanderthal with only a club takes credit for the wit and cunning of the Teen Angels as they solve crimes??? This has to be the most egregious case of a very very very very old man hanging out with girls far too young for him, and then stealing all of their good ideas. And why did every teenager in the 60s and 70s feel like they had to solve crimes??? Where were they living that was so crime-infested it could support 37 juvenile detective agencies?

The Great Gazoo

I don't even know what to say about The Great Gazoo. People forget that The Flinstones was not a kid's show. It was on in primetime...for adults. The humor was made for grown-ups...until this monstrosity. The only redeeming thing about Gazoo is that he was voiced by the great Harvey Korman. Other than that, he is the ultimate in Cousin Olivers.

THE SHOW I AM WATCHING

I'm assuming we can all just admit this is a classic by this point?!?!?! The sultry, sexy Bob Hoskins πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€, starring alongside the animated Jessica Rabbit, is still hilarious on rewatching. For a movie that was such a technical marvel at the time, it still holds up remarkably well.

Playing off of the famed (and one of my favorites) film noir era of Hollywood, the movie sends up 40's detective flicks with gusto. The writing is sharp, the acting is superb, and Robert Zemeckis shows off pre-Forrest Gump magic. It deserves all of the awards it received,

SUSAN WARE CLIP OF THE WEEK

One of Susan's greatest performances is when she voiced a World War I spy who seduces the Red Baron in the animated classic Red Baron? He Looks Sepia. It was a true tour de force as she studied for months to perfect her German accent. Sadly, the movie came out in 1925, four years before any theatre was equipped with sound. So a grand total of zero people ever heard her lines. It did give her a chance to actually seduce the Red Baron's real-life cousin Larry Von Richtofen. Unfortunately, he had none of the charm or bravery of the famed pilot, and spent his days testing #2 pencils for civil service exams. The affair was brief but legendary.

Anyways, check out Susan by clicking HERE.

I hope you enjoy these as well! Feel free to subscribe if you want. I will also include them here, but the posts that come from her site are hilarious and go out on Mondays and Thursdays!

HERE'S A RECIPE

I pride myself on eating healthy and authentic foods from all over the world. Today's recipe is inspired by 196,000 years of living off the land...farm-to-table if you will...

Open bag of already sliced carrots

Open tub of Sabra Hummus

Eat

I don't know if this is paleo or Atkins or just straight-up delicious the way the good lord intended, but I honor the fine chefs of the middle east by eating straight from their authentic hummus plastic tub the exact way their ancestors have done for millenia. I saw a picture of hummus and carrots on a plate and scoffed. Why??? Putting on airs for the neighbors??? No thanks.
