The Only Down Side of the World Cup??? All of the Soccer...

Boy howdy! If it wasn't for all of the futbol, I think I would LOVE the World Cup! Literally any other sport would be great. Beer Pong. Lawn Darts. Lung Darts. Backgammon. I'm here for all of it. There is just something about trying to watch soccer as an American who eats meat that is hard to cope with. Maybe it's the ties. Maybe it's the "nil" stuff. Maybe it is that we are just not good at it. I don't know... I know we are supposed to pretend otherwise and keep those thoughts inside, but I think TV ratings show I am not alone in my feelings...

But before you think I am a Negative Nelly, LET ME SAY THIS-- I will be watching! I LOVE international festivities and flavors, and in Los Angeles, where everyone on earth is represented, it is fun! And in Kansas City, my actual hometown, it is an awesome chance to show the world just how amazing we are...

Even if it is with soccer...:) (btw...Thank God we also have Mahomes and Kelce)!

Here is some stuff I like and hope you like too...

AS ALWAYS, REPLY TO THIS EMAIL WITH YOUR THOUGHTS AND COMMENTS AND STUFF YOU WANT TO SEE! I FEEDBACK IS ALWAYS APPRECIATED!

THE AYSO

Back in the day, I used to pretend I was Pele and practice doing bicycle kicks. I always landed on my head, and I feel fairly confident that's where most of the damage came from, but I loved it. Soccer in America to a young kid was (and probably still is) the coolest thing ever. I loved the orange slices the most, then the Gatorade, then the goalie gloves, then the shin guards...then the game. Specifically in that order. It had that same quality that t-ball has-- no one wanted to watch and no one really wanted to play. But your friends had to do it too, so you loved it, and the parents just drank beer from their Lil Oscar coolers to make the time more bearable.

The AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization) was the bomb back in the day... A total blast! And soccer was awesome...until you turned 11. Then you played football, at least in Kansas. It was like you hit a mythical line in the sand, and there was no more discussion. The greatest part about playing football as a kid was the one who made me play-- who never let me say no or quit-- was my mom! My mom loves football--still has Chiefs Season Tix-- and by God, you were gonna have your scrawny butt out there on the field if she had to drag you out there herself. One of the many reasons my mom was the coolest mom ever!

"Mom, playing football hurts."

"You don't think giving birth hurt??? I don't even want to hear it. No more whining until you score a touchdown!"

Maybe my memories are a bit warped, but it was a blast regardless! 😄😄😄

BEST MOM EVER!

MY SPOTIFY PLAYLIST OF THE WEEK...

CO2ISFUNNY | Songs About Bending it Like Beckham From Someone Who Is Broken...

  2. Popular | Nada Surf

  3. Chelsea Dagger | The Fratellis

  4. Two Halves | Richard Dawson

  5. All I Want For Christmas Is A Dukla Pragma Away Kit | Half Man Half Biscuit

  6. Theme From Sparta F.C. | The Fall

  7. God's Footballer | Billy Bragg

  8. Munich Air Disaster 1958 | Morrissey

  9. Leeds United | Luke Haines

  10. World In Motion | New Order 😄😄😄

THE SHOW I AM WATCHING

I had an internal battle this week...Ladybugs or Kicking and Screaming??? Both are classic in their own way. Both star comedy legends I adore (Rodney Dangerfield in this case, Will Ferrell in the other). I ended up going with Ladybugs solely because it is a bit more obscure and perhaps a little more of an undiscovered treasure.

If you are like me and you love everything Rodney Dangerfield ever did in his brilliant career, then this is for you! Here, he plays a soccer coach desperate for a win, so he dresses his stepson as a girl to win a few games and impress his boss. Excluding all parallels to modern conversations, I do miss when this was a trope concept that could carry a movie. There was something so basic and straightforward about these types of classic screwball comedies that I do miss in modern movies.

DRIVE TO KC

On Sunday, I will be driving back to KC from LA for a week. The drive is literally 24 hours on the dot, and I LOVE it! I do it twice a year (June and Christmas) and I must say--I prefer June! 😄😄😄

People ask me all the time-- why do you drive? Why not just fly? My dad used to do drives like this all the time, and I fell in love with the American West while driving around with him. I love the sights and sounds of the west (maybe not so much the smells all the time-- I'm looking at you Dodge City)...

Here are a few of the fun (???) places that people drive past too quickly...

  1. This is here for my best road-tripping buddy ever--my sister Kat! For some reason, Kansas has dozens of little Statues of Liberty that were put up by the Boy Scouts around 1950. Kat and I would stop at them all if we could! That is why she is the best person to travel with! Lots of sightseeing, lots of breaks... We'll get there eventually!

  2. Linwood Cemetery is the final resting place of Doc Holliday. Found it while snowed in once in Colorado.

  3. LeCompton was the first capital of Kansas and a dark spot in our nation's history

  4. Just some prettiness from the West--a shot of Arizona and one from Utah. So pretty to me...

SUSAN WARE CLIP OF THE WEEK

I am so in love with this project that Susan and I are doing that I am going to include our posts out here weekly for a little while. We are now working on the history of SOB Pictures. It is all so ridiculous, but Susan's comedy is brilliant and makes it so much fun to do this stuff with her!

I hope you enjoy these as well! Feel free to subscribe if you want. I will also include them here, but the posts that come from her site are hilarious and go out on Mondays!
