DERBY DAY IS THE BEST DAY!!!

Who would have thought that horses need their own Super Bowl??? This is it! If you have never been to Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day, immediately put it on your bucket list. It is the single greatest sporting event I have ever attended, narrowly edging out the Monte Carlo Grand Prix. When you go, do it up Col. Sanders-style and have yourself a southern-fried blast! The only way to do the Derby is dial it up to 11...

Here is some stuff I like and hope you like too...

AS ALWAYS, REPLY TO THIS EMAIL WITH YOUR THOUGHTS AND COMMENTS AND STUFF YOU WANT TO SEE! I FEEDBACK IS ALWAYS APPRECIATED!

SEABISCUIT

Oh, Seabiscuit--the plucky little horse that could. I don't know much about the actual facts other than what Tobey Maguire told us all in the movie. But I do love the idea of a tiny little horse being able to beat up on super-stud War Admiral. Somewhere inside of all of us is a tiny Little Seabiscuit just ready to burst out and surprise the world. At least that's what Tony Robbins says...

I like underdog stories, even when they are equestrian. He's like a bigger version of Benji, and we could all use a little more of that in the world! 😄 😄 😄 If Seabiscuit were alive in California today, we'd slap a 5% wealth tax on him, and he'd pack up and move to Texas, a move he would immediately regret when July rolls in, and he'd come whinnying back. But at least he wouldn't be in Florida! 😄😄😄

That's as inspiring as I get, but I hope it helps!

(SPOILER ALERT: I guess Seabiscuit never ran in the Derby... Who knew??? Why did they even make the movie then??? I haven't been this disappointed in a film since Phantom Menace)

MY SPOTIFY PLAYLIST OF THE WEEK...

CO2ISFUNNY | Best Songs About Riding Horses From A Jockey With Terrible Allergies...

Let's get into the Derby spirit with some straight-up love for the big guys. And the Mint Juleps that make it all go. My doctor would most definitely frown on imbibing, but it sure was fun while it lasted! The Bourbon Trail is legit!

Here now for your listening enjoyment are 10 songs that remind us how much cooler horses are than cars, and other urban myths...

  1. A Horse With No Name | America

  2. Wild Horses | Rolling Stones

  3. Tennessee Stud |Johnny Cash

  4. Save A Horse (Ride A Cowboy) | Big & Rich

  5. The Strawberry Roan | Marty Robbins

  6. Chestnut Mare| The Byrds

  7. White Horse | Taylor Swift

  8. Judy and the Dream of Horses | Belle & Sebastian

  9. Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses | U2

  10. Cowgirl in the Sand | Neil Young

THE SHOW I AM WATCHING

There are lots of great horse movies out there, and most of them are way better than this week's movie--The Electric Horseman. There is nothing really super great about this movie other than I saw it with my dad in the theater when I was a kid, and I thought Robert Redford and my dad were the coolest guys who ever walked the earth.

Redford is Sonny Steele (another great name!), a former rodeo star who's washed up and agrees to promote a cereal on horseback in Las Vegas. When he finds out the horse has been abused, he takes off for the Nevada desert with intrepid big city reporter Hallie Martin (Jane Fonda) hot on the case. Will they fall in love and set the horse free? You'll have to watch to see the obvious but charming answer! But at least the horse never has to fight in World War I like War Horse.

J. RIEGER & CO DERBY PARTY

For all of my KC friends, if you can't make it to Louisville for the actual derby, your next best bet is the J. Rieger & Co Distillery. I have a particular fondness for all things Rieger, as my old company was a small investor early on (and I think I still have some shares somewhere...), What Ryan Maybee and Andy Rieger have been able to accomplish with reviving this brand has been inspiring (the history of the J. Rieger brand is absolutely incredible and worth a read), and if you have been to the distillery, you can attest it is a true experience like no other in KC. Don't miss it!

COMEDIAN TO KNOW: Jess Winther on Netflix Is A Joke!!!

Again--taking a personal liberty... (this is becoming a bad habit!). I am just so incredibly proud to share that Jess' show Jess' Jokes at the Oaks got picked up by Netflix Is A Joke. No one works harder at comedy and her craft than Jess, and she deserves all of the success in the world that she has been grinding for. I may be slightly biased 😄😄😄 but I think she is insanely funny (and a bit of a super-fox 🥰), and I know she is going to crush this show! If you cannot tell, I am just over the moon for her and her accomplishments! They are truly well-earned.

If you are in the LA area on Monday night, there are just a few tickets left. THEY ARE FREE ALSO! You can get them at jokesattheoaks.com!

CLIP OF THE WEEK

I do not fuel my body with the Breakfast of Champions. Rather, it is the sad remainder of a school lunch program sponsored by Hostess. Except I like soup...
