BIRTHDAY BLUES

I am not a birthday person. I am never excited about recalling my fleeting youth, the lifetime full of bad decisions I have made, how it will all come to an abrupt end far sooner than I was hoping, and how very little I have actually accomplished in this far too brief spn on the globe... And on that cheery note, that was my yesterday! April 15. A day that despite all of my protestations and wishes for the opposite, insists on coming around every year. "Beats the alternative", people tell me. Does it, though? That bar is getting awfully low! 😄😄😄 Now, enough self-pity! We have stuff to discuss...(kinda like The View except I try to make this entertaining so you don't want to fall on a sword every time you see this pop up in your email!)...

Here is some stuff I like and hope you like too...

AS ALWAYS, REPLY TO THIS EMAIL WITH YOUR THOUGHTS AND COMMENTS AND STUFF YOU WANT TO SEE! I FEEDBACK IS ALWAYS APPRECIATED!

APRIL 15

April 15 is a peach of a day. Lots of fun and exciting historical events have happened on this monumental day on the calendar. In addition to Tax Day, here is a run-through of just the biggest...

  1. It was the day Abraham Lincoln died. No loss there. Just the assassination of our greatest president, and perhaps one of the finest fellas to ever grace the high plains of earth. Nothing to see here, folks.

  2. It was the day the Titanic sank. It takes some sort of special cosmic power that aligns the stars so perfectly that an unsinkable boat--one of the greatest engineering marvels in human history-- can bump into a few cocktail cubes in the dark, and only a few hours later forever be lost to Davy Jones' Locker, along with a Guggenheim, apparantly a crazy expensive necklace Billy Zane is still looking for, and the good draft of the script James Cameron had no part in writing.

  3. It was the day they tried to blow up the Boston Marathon. Listen, I don't like running any more than the next fella. In fact, I would go so far as to say I hate it. I have one of the dustiest Nike Plus gadgets ever created. I think it was sad to be sold to me. Like when a Ferrari is purchased by a grandma with cataracts, stuck in a future without being able to show off its moves. I suppose I have just never understood the appeal of bombs--whether it was the Unabomber or the crazy shoe guy on the plane or the OKC guys--I always wish it had just gone off wrong in the lab. Seems like tons of amateur home scientists burned their places down with stuff from Radio Shack trying to learn about science. Why can't the same fate befall these people???

  4. It was the day Notre Dame burned to the ground. I LOVE paris! There--I said it. I am a Francophile. There is no America without the French, and every time they cop an attitude and get snobby and critique my accent and the way I can never properly say "croissant au Nutella", I just smile and think to myself, "You're not speaking German, and we don't have a King. Let's call it even." I spent a wee bit of time living in Paris with a friend in the early 2000's, and the news of Notre Dame burning crushed the last traces of Charlemagne remaining in my soul. I was thrilled they were able to do the restoration, and I am really looking forward to a visit one day soon! I would also love to see my godson Jules and his parents, Emmanuelle and Guillaume! It's been too long.

MY SPOTIFY PLAYLIST OF THE WEEK...

CO2ISFUNNY | Best Songs About Ships From A Guy Who Would Surely Drown...

Can I swim? Yes. Can I swim well? Nope. Definitely not well enough to survive a raft flipping over, much less a boat sinking. My only chance would have been to boot Rose off of the floating door and get myself to safety. Btw...there was plenty of room! 😄😄😄

Here now for your listening enjoyment are 10 songs that remind me I am not an aquatic superstar...

  1. The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald | Gordon Lightfoot

  2. Ornico Flow | Enya (this is only on here for @thejessicawinther!!!)

  3. Brandy (You're A Fine Girl) |Looking Glass

  4. Into the Mystic | Van Morrison

  5. Sail Away| David Gray

  6. If I Had A Boat | Lyle Lovett

  7. Six Months in A Leaky Boat | Split Enz

  8. Sailing | Christopher Cross

  9. Southern Cross | Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

  10. Calypso | John Denver

THE SHOW I AM WATCHING

Robert Redford movies are usually a hit or miss affair--meaningful subjects treated with kid gloves and wrapped in a bow at the end. The Conspirator is different. It is nuanced and well-researched, and the deep-dive into the lives of these real-life characters is better than any examination of the Lincoln assassination I have ever seen. These are not stock characters--they are psychological profiles of people with very conflicting ideologies who all believed they were doing the right thing, regardless of how wrong it truly was.

Robin Wright is particularly effective as the first woman ever given the death penalty in the US, and raises some interesting questions about her guilt and cuplibility, as well as the inhumanity of her treatment, and the barbarism of the judicial process at the time.

Beats Quiz Show and A River Runs Through It 😄😄😄!

VIVI LABS

As you know, I love to celebrate the cool things my friends are doing. I met Stefan Hertzberg a couple of years ago when he was working at a restaurant industry software firm, and I, as some of you know, do marketing and consulting for restaurant franchises when I am not being utterly hilarious on the comedy stages of America. We hit it off and traded a bunch of ideas. Then Stefan decided to make the big move and start his own thing, and it is blowing up for him!!! He is the Co-Founder and CEO of Vivi Labs.

"Vivi is a better-for-you coffee that gives you everything you love about your morning cup, plus ingredients your body actually needs as it gets older. Each serving is crafted with compounds that help your cells produce and hold onto more energy, support your skin, hair, nails, and joints from the inside out, and reduce the inflammation that builds up over time and slows you down. No jitters, no crash, no extra pills to remember. Just your morning coffee, working harder for you."

I saw his LinkedIn post that they are kicking off New York City today, and I thought it was pretty awesome to see good things happening to good people.

AS ALWAYS, I MAKE NOTHING AND GET NOTHING FOR THESE. I JUST LIKE TO SHARE COOL STUFF.

COMEDIAN TO KNOW: Jay Ko

I love Jay Ko's comedy! He is a regular at the mic I host on Wednesday and Thursday nights in Studio City, and his dry, smart takes on life are nothing short of hilarious! His jokes are layered and specific, and the tailoring of the writing is truly impressive. CLICK THE IMAGE FOR A VIDEO CLIP
