FINALLY! LET'S SKIP SOME WORK, SHALL WE??? ...

It has been a long, cold winter since the end of the football season. I tried to pretend I like the Olympics more than I really do. I thought twice about going for a hike but it seemed too strenuous for my delicate frame. I even tried to join a book club, but my usually incredible sister-in-law Jess gave me the high hat.

[TO BE FAIR...I think it's because last time we did a book club together I recommended a book called American Sherlock: Murder, Forensics, and the Birth of American CSI, and to say it was not well-received by either her or my brother Mark is an understatement. I loved it because it had a lot on info about the Roscoe Fatty Arbuckle case, a case I am beyond fascinated with, and would love to someday see Virginia Rappe proven right. Tragic. They did not see the upside of it though.]

Anyways, sports are back for the next three weeks, so let's get to it!

Here is some stuff I like and hope you like too...

AS ALWAYS, REPLY TO THIS EMAIL WITH YOUR THOUGHTS AND COMMENTS AND STUFF YOU WANT TO SEE! I FEEDBACK IS ALWAYS APPRECIATED!

BRITISH MONARCHY

Those of you who have followed me for a while now know that I love sports, and also that I am an amazing sports handicapper.😀 I have no doubt that in another life, I was Lefty Rosenthal, running the Tropicana for the KC mob and expecting to be blown up every time I started my car. I say all of that as my bona fides so I can say this... You can take these picks to the bank!

When I tell you that without a doubt, hands down, no questions asked, the Kansas Jayhawks will be the undisputed winner of the 2026 NCAA Men's basketball tourney, you can bet your kid's college fund that I am right... (especially if your kid's school of choice is Kansas, because even if I am wrong, the school is really cheap, so it won't be too much of a setback...).

I have the Jayhawks narrowly defeating the Arizona Wildcats. How did I come to this conclusion? Easy--two of my sisters went there. Both Maureen and Bridget spent their formative years doing too much partying and not enough studying at U of A. And they both love their alma mater. So I don't mind seeing them come in second.

Using the same logic, I should have Michigan (my brother Mark) and Michigan State (the aforementioned Jess) in the running, but both Michigans win way too much stuff. Just be smart for a while and let us have our sports! You can't have everything!

So that is how I come to the conclusion that my brother Matt, my sister Kat and I will all be celebrating our Jayhawks' well-earned championship banner come April. (If you are trying to count the number of kids, it is 6...and before you ask, yes--we are Catholic).

MY SPOTIFY PLAYLIST OF THE WEEK...

All the Best Songs About Kansas (or the Only Songs About Kansas)...

Oh Kansas. How you have been lauded in song...by almost no one. It is sad how few tremendous Kansas songs we have, especially if you discount songs by the band Kansas.

After much searching, these are the 10 songs about Kansas that are bearable...

  1. Campfire Kansas | The Get Up Kids

  2. Wichita Lineman | Ghost of An American Airman

  3. Seven Nation Army | The White Stripes

  4. On the Atchison, Topeka & the Santa Fe | Judy Garland, Kay Thompson Chorus

  5. You're Not in Kansas Anymore | Jo Dee Messina

  6. Kansas | Luke Bryan

  7. Salina | The Avett Brothers

  8. Mystified | Better Than Ezra

  9. Kansas City | The New Basement Tapes

  10. Over the Rainbow | Jusy Garland

THE SHOW I AM WATCHING

I know you all think I only put snobby, black and white movies in here to show off my incredible taste and super big brains (neither of which would I actually be accused of in real-life), but this week, I am going to the well and hauling up Semi-Pro. Forget Hoosiers. This is the best basketball movie of all time.

Will Ferrell as Jackie Moon is a comedy treasure, and Andre Benjamin (Outkast) and Woody Harrelson and hilarious as well. Will Arnett steals the show (as he often does) as the color commentator, and the bear wrestling promotion is amazing.

I will watch (almost) anything with Will Ferrell, and this movie is criminally underrated.

CRIME, KC-STYLE!!!

I know this is a lot of recommendations, but every year I re-read this book by my buddy Frank Hayde, and I love it even more. I am a huge history buff, and I am fascinated by the 20's and 30's. I always wonder what life would have been like in KC back in the day when the city was truly rocking and was a national powerhouse. Luckily, I have Frank's book to fill me in! I have a horrible affinity for our former crime boss Tom Pendergast, to the point where I seriously tried to buy his old office in downtown Kansas City. Tom was the one who put Truman in office, and is often considered the model of the crime boss in Mr Smith Goes to Washington. Anyways, I like him... If you like history or crime or just Kansas City, this is the best book out there! And when you are done, he has more! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

COMEDIAN TO KNOW: Jehona "JoJo" Corrales

Jehona, or JoJo, Corrales is hilarious and a new friend. We have done several shows together now, and she will occasionally pop into my mic in Studio City. I think she is one of the best storytellers out there, and the tales of her adventures-- whether a weird night in Santa Monica or her many animal stories-- they are all truly funny. Check out a recent video HERE.

CLIP OF THE WEEK

Still buying time. I need an assistant! Here is one I still like about the absurdity of the gold standard. Same stuff every other comedian is writing jokes about, right?!?!
