In honor of St. Patrick's Day, it seems the question must be asked...Why is there still a monarchy?
I say this against my own wishes. I love the British monarchy...or at least I love the British monarchy when they do incredibly dumb things, which seems to be all the time! Setting aside the obvious scandal du jour (looking straight at you Andrew Albert Christian Edward Mountbatten-Windsor), The Firm does enough goofy things to entertain for a lifetime. Megan Markle and Harry are just annoying enough to be almost entertaining (I like it when she pretends she is just a lowly cook whipping up homemade recipes on Netflix in their $15 million Montecito Chateau...her favorite recipe seems to be called "Trouble", which is what she is actually good at). Camila and Charles try desperately to act as if they have ever done a single day's worth of a commoner's work. William and Kate are as exciting as wall paste. Then there are the cousins in the insane hats, cursing their lot in life to be born so close but yet so incredibly far. BTW... the royal family is not even British--they are German. They made the switch from Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to Windsor in 1917, as it seemed a bad look to be German while fighting the Germans (unless you are Edward VIII, who, after abdicating, decided to become buddies with the Nazis during WWII). What a long, proud tradition of service to God and country.
I miss the days when if you didn't like the king, you just chopped his head off and went to war for a hundred or so years. You just picked your favorite color of rose, grabbed your sword, kissed one of your six wives goodbye, and set off for battle.
Where is Mel Gibson yelling "FREEDOM" when you need him???
Maybe none of this raises the stature of Irish people in the world (we will need a collective cup of strong coffee for that! 😃), but I never mind seeing British aristocratic snobbiness knocked down a peg or two. Could just be the humble midwesterner in me...
HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY IN ADVANCE!
